Match report OPCC 6XI beat Frenford 5XI by 10 runs

After 10 matches, OPCC 6th XI finally celebrated their first-ever league victory with a hard-fought 10-run win over Frenford CC. It was a memorable day for a Parks , whose determination, discipline and team spirit earned a historic result.

Stand-in captain Manicks Shankar won the toss for the second consecutive week and, having learned from the previous fixture at the same ground where batting second proved extremely difficult, elected to bat first.

Openers Waqar Yusuf (29) and promising youngster Mrithvigan "Vigan" Pireshannah (14), making the most of his promotion up the order, got Parks off to an excellent start. The pair added 40 runs in the opening eight overs, showing positive intent against the new ball.

The momentum shifted with the introduction of Frenford's talented young left-arm spinner Bhavraj "Bubloo" Sohal, who produced an outstanding spell of 4 for 24 from eight overs. With the pitch offering sharp turn and unpredictable bounce, scoring became increasingly difficult as wickets fell in quick succession, leaving OPCC struggling at 55 for 7.

Experienced campaigner Gurmit Bhatia once again showed his value to the side. Remaining calm under pressure, he combined sensible stroke play with positive intent to score an excellent 40, guiding the lower order through a crucial partnership. His efforts helped Parks post 122 all out in 28.3 overs, a total that looked below par but gave the bowlers something to defend.

Knowing the surface would continue to challenge the batters, OPCC took the field full of confidence and energy. Opening bowlers Kushal Talluri (2 for 19) and Manicks Shankar (2 for 26) set the tone with disciplined spells, maintaining tight lines and making full use of the conditions.

The young Parks side backed their bowlers brilliantly, fielding with intensity throughout the innings and refusing to give away easy runs. Every player contributed in the field, creating constant pressure that forced Frenford into mistakes.

Veteran spinner Mazham Ali then tightened the screws further with a superb spell of 2 for 13 from eight overs, drying up the scoring and building even more pressure. Returning after a wrist injury, young fast bowler Nathan Pradeep showed tremendous promise with an impressive spell of 3 for 6, removing three lower-order batters to leave Frenford reeling at 82 for 9 after 28 overs.

Frenford's last-wicket pair, S. Abbas (11) and M. Fazl (9), fought bravely, adding valuable runs to take the score to 103 and briefly threatening an unlikely escape.

With bowling options limited and one wicket still required, captain Shankar turned to the experienced Gurmit Bhatia. After spending 34 overs behind the stumps, where he had already claimed three catches and a stumping, Bhatia handed the wicketkeeping gloves to young Kushal Taluuri and took the ball himself.

In fitting fashion, Bhatia completed a remarkable all-round performance by dismissing the dangerous Abbas, caught behind by Talluri, sealing a 10 run memorable victory and capping a deserved Player of the Match display.

The win marks a historic milestone as OPCC 6th XI's first-ever league victory. Even more encouraging was the performance of a youngsters in the side that showed resilience, belief and maturity beyond its years. With several talented youngsters making significant contributions alongside the experience of senior players, Parks will take great confidence from this breakthrough result and look to build on it in the weeks ahead.
