Frenford v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 05 Sep 2026 at 12
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 83 runs

Match report Going into the final game of the season, the equation was simple and brutal in equal measure: win, and hope. Win against Frenford — the same side who had handed Parkonians a 10-wicket thrashing earlier in the season — and then wait, nervously, for Ilford to do Parkonians a favour by beating Westcliff. Two results needed. Zero margin for error. Season on the line. With the stakes this high, a squad was named that blended experience with fresh faces, drafting in players from the 4th XI to bolster the ranks — among them Lakshmi Narayanan, a decision that would prove utterly inspired before the day was done.

Batting first, Parkonians needed a statement innings — and they got one. Umesh Jinka, the man who had defined this season with his extraordinary sequence of centuries, fell for 49 after a watchful start, perhaps carrying the weight of the occasion more than usual. But when Venkata Jinka strode to the crease, the tone changed completely. What followed was a magnificent, match-winning century of the highest order. Venkata Jinka — playing the innings of his life on the most important day of the season — smashed 106 off just 87 balls, 11 fours and 5 sixes, in a display of controlled aggression that left Frenford shellshocked and lifted every Parkonians player, supporter and onlooker who witnessed it. This was not a knock played in comfortable circumstances — this was a century scored under the most intense pressure, when the entire season rested on every delivery. It was simply outstanding. Lakshmi Narayanan, brought in from the 4th XI, immediately repaid the faith shown in him with a superb 48 off 40 balls — 6 fours and a six — to forge a match-defining partnership with Venkata Jinka that gave Parkonians the total they needed. Bijay Basnet cracked a brisk 24 and Alan Bouquet finished unbeaten on 14 to ensure Parkonians squeezed every last run from the innings. Hassan Saeed was the pick of Frenford's bowlers with 4 for 44, but he and his teammates were fighting a losing battle. Parkonians closed on a formidable and fighting 321 for 9.

Frenford began positively and dangerously. Rohit Puthawala — the destroyer-in-chief from the earlier encounter in the season — threatened to tear the game away from Parkonians once more, racing to 62 off 46 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. It felt ominous. It felt familiar. The kind of start that, earlier in the season, had made 322 look gettable. But this Parkonians side has grown enormously over the course of the campaign, and the response was emphatic. The dismissal itself was worth the admission fee alone — Rohit Puthawala launching the ball into the stratosphere before Lakshmi Narayanan, summoned from the 4th XI for this very occasion, held a stunning catch that seemed to defy gravity, the ball having nearly left Essex entirely before he pouched it to perfection. He himself, fresh from his batting heroics, picked up the ball and produced a quite magnificent bowling spell — 4 for 42 from 9 overs — to rip the heart out of the Frenford chase. Upender Sanga was his trusted, unerring self, claiming 3 for 24 from 9 overs including a maiden — figures that barely do justice to just how difficult he is to score against. Bijay Basnet and Sayem Ahmed chipped in with a wicket apiece, and Taseen Ansari's spirited 46 was ultimately too little, too late. Frenford were bowled out for 238 in 42.4 overs — Parkonians had won by 83 runs.

But winning wasn't enough. Not yet.

Somewhere across Essex, Ilford were playing Westcliff-on-Sea. Parkonians needed Ilford to win. As stumps were drawn and the celebrations began to bubble, phones were checked, refreshed, checked again. On a day, where it had already been confirmed that the Parks 1st XI (Champions), 2nd XI and 4th XI had promotions confirmed, for the 3rd XI squad there was mixture of exhaustion, elation and raw nerves — fell into an anxious, electric silence every time someone glanced at a screen. Conversations were half-finished. Laughter was slightly too loud, slightly too forced. Every Parkonians player knew exactly what they were waiting for, and exactly what it would mean.

Minutes felt like hours. And then — it came.

Ilford had beaten Westcliff. The news swept through the club like a wave breaking. What followed was pure, unbridled, completely deserved joy. The celebrations that erupted were not just for the win against Frenford — they were for every net session, every early morning, every tight defeat, every dropped catch, every valiant lower-order partnership, every extraordinary innings from Umesh Jinka, every miserly Upender Sanga spell, and every single person who had contributed to this remarkable season.

Oakfield Parkonians CC 3rd XI are going to the Premier Division!!!

Where to even begin. Umesh Jinka's three consecutive centuries — 115, 116, and 123 — a sequence of batting that belongs in the record books. Upender Sanga's relentless, masterful accuracy week after week. The character shown in bouncing back from heavy defeats. The depth and unity of a squad that pulled together when it mattered most. And today, a century from Venkata Jinka and a stunning all-round debut contribution from Lakshmi Narayanan, borrowed from the 4th XI, to seal the greatest moment for the 3rd XI in recent memory.

Captain Fazan Habib and every single member of this squad should be enormously proud. They earned this — every last bit of it.

See you next year in the Premier Division.
