Match report Bentley CC endured a frustrating afternoon as Oakfield Parkonians CC chased down 236 with six wickets to spare in a competitive Essex league encounter. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Bentley posted 235 all out from their allotted 50 overs, only for the Parks to reach the target comfortably in 42 overs thanks to an outstanding unbeaten century from Ryan Karunakaran.

Bentley’s innings began poorly when Ashley Parmenter fell early for five, caught behind off Sifth Ali with the score on 14. However, Max Stevenson and Phil Coleman rebuilt superbly, adding 104 for the second wicket to put Bentley in a strong position. Stevenson played fluently throughout his 64 from 83 balls, striking six fours and a six, while Coleman was equally positive with 51 from 56 deliveries, including nine boundaries. The pair kept the scoreboard moving steadily and looked set to lay the foundations for a total well in excess of 250. Coleman’s dismissal, caught by Navine Sureshan off Prajen Kavinkumar, halted Bentley’s momentum before Stevenson departed soon after for an excellent half-century, trapped by Paran Kalley. Bentley then struggled to accelerate during the closing stages. Luke Whitbourn battled hard for 17 from 60 balls, while James Raeburn contributed a useful 36 from 45 deliveries to keep the innings together. Quick wickets through the middle and lower order prevented Bentley from fully capitalising on their platform. Matt Coleman provided a late flourish with 19 from just 13 balls, but regular breakthroughs from Oakfield ensured the innings closed at 235 all out. Navine Sureshan was the standout bowler for Oakfield Parkonians, producing an economical and disciplined spell of 3 for 35 from his 10 overs. Paran Kalley and Ryan Karunakaran both claimed two wickets apiece, while Sifth Ali also chipped in with two wickets at important moments.

In reply, Oakfield Parkonians made a measured start before accelerating impressively through the middle overs. Bilaal Anwar made 18 and Paresh Kalley struck a quickfire 30 from 27 balls before Bentley fought back to leave Parks at 88 for 3. At that stage the game appeared evenly poised, but Ryan Karunakaran then took complete control of the chase with a superb unbeaten century. Showing composure and authority throughout, he finished on 100 not out from 98 balls, striking 13 fours and two sixes in a match-winning innings. He was well supported first by Umar Choudhry, who added 19, and then by Manoj Sarathchandra, whose aggressive 47 from 44 balls shifted momentum decisively in Oakfield’s favour. Their partnership carried Parks to 173 for 4 and effectively sealed the outcome before Navine Sureshan joined Karunakaran to complete the chase with eight overs remaining.

That is now 3 wins from 3 in the league for Oakfield Parkonians and if the boys carry on playing this way then this season will be an interesting one.
