OPCC 5th XI’s season got off to a challenging start with an 88-run loss to Brentwood 5th XI at the picturesque De Rougemont ground. After conceding their opening match, the team was determined to make an impact, but despite some promising individual performances, they were unable to overcome a competitive total set by their opponents.
Brentwood’s captain won the toss and chose to bat first on a dry, flat wicket, and his decision paid off. The early exchanges were dominated by Parks' bowlers, with Nav Kalley (1/18) leading the way. He was ably supported by Rameyaan Selvamohan and debutant Manish Gaikwad, who bowled well in the early stages. However, Brentwood capitalised during the middle overs, taking advantage of a few mistakes in the field and some wayward bowling.
The key contributions from the hosting team came from Joseph Paisley (48), Frankie Paisley (34), and Chris Boon Snr (36). A special mention goes to debutants Manish Gaikwad and Aadhitiya Premkumar, who each claimed a wicket on their senior league debut.
Chasing 232 to win, OPCC 5th XI’s response got off to a rocky start. Both openers were dismissed early, leaving the team in a difficult position. However, a determined knock of 54 from Amar Desai provided some hope, supported by a steady 23 from Shankar Manicks.
Despite their best efforts, Parks couldn’t build enough partnerships to challenge the target, and they were eventually bowled out for 143 in 36.2 overs, handing Brentwood an 88-run victory.
While the result was disappointing, there were several positives to take away from the match. The team's bowlers, particularly the younger players, showed promise, and Amar Desai's performance with the bat was a bright spot. The team will focus on improving their consistency in the coming weeks as they look ahead to the next fixture.
As always, the 5th XI will regroup and work on key areas to ensure they bounce back stronger in their next match.
