Ilford v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 26 Apr 2025 at 12.30pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets.

Match report In an engaging contest at Essex, Ilford CC 1st XI emerged victorious by 5 wickets over Oakfield Parkonians CC 1st XI, chasing down a target of 200 with 10 balls to spare in the 1st XI League Cup match. After losing the toss and being put into bat, Ilford executed their plan well, with the outfield being really slow and batsmen not getting the value for their shots. Bhajandip Purewal (10) and Viraj Khagram (15) fell cheaply, and at 25/2, Ilford seemed to have a grip on proceedings. However, a composed and strategic approach from the middle order turned the tide. Bilaal Anwar (44) and Umar Choudhry (42) led the recovery with a steady third-wicket stand. Both batters showed maturity, rotating the strike and pouncing on loose deliveries. When Bilaal and Umar lost their wickets, it was the turn of the lower order to try and get to the magical 200 figure they spoke about in the morning. Paresh Kalley (26) and Taranpreet Bhatia (20)* applied calm under pressure, taking the game deep. Bhatia’s unbeaten knock, in particular, showed excellent temperament. Due to Paresh's and Tarun's big hitting we were able to get to the 200 mark and thought it was a more than comfortable score to defend. Ilford's bowling was tight in phases, especially through Theeban Tavarasa (2/23) and Haaris Ayub (2/23).

Ilford got off to a cautious start, with openers Akhil Anil (12) and Akash Raji (18) falling early. The middle order offered some resistance, particularly through Mohammad Akhtar, who top-scored with a patient 37. However, wickets fell at regular intervals as Prajen Kavinkumar led the Ilford bowling attack with a clinical spell of 9-0-32-3. Despite losing six wickets by the 30-over mark, Ilford showed grit in the latter overs. Gagan Bhogal (57)* anchored the innings brilliantly, forming a crucial unbeaten partnership with Haaris Ayub (30)*. Their composed stand helped Ilford recover and push the total to 204/5, aided by 28 extras, which included a generous 23 wides and 5 no-balls. The extras proved to be the boys downfall in the end as there were just too many and it made it difficult to recover from that. OPCC bowlers were economical and disciplined, particularly Navine Sureshan, who returned an impressive 1 for 21 off 9 overs, and Taranpreet Bhatia (1/27) who also chipped in with a valuable breakthrough.

With this loss it means that the boys are now out of the league cup, but it was good to get a competitive run out before the league starts on the 10th of May
