Chingford v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 10 Aug 2024 at 12.30pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Parks visited Peter May Centre in E17 to face Chingford in their final time game of the season. Stand-in skipper Manicks Shankar won the toss and opted to bat on a pitch that appeared favourable for batsmen early on. Parks' young opening duo, Terry Ranjit and Awn Minhas, made a solid start, reaching 25 runs in the first five overs before Terry (10) was caught at point. Thirteen-year-old Awn Minhas showcased his class and technique, scoring a stylish 25 with a mix of elegant drives and powerful leg-side pull shots. The ever-dependable middle order then took charge, propelling the score to 190-5 in 40 overs, with notable contributions from Chamara Jayawardana (33), Upender Sanga (27), Siddharth Barua (34), and Sai Vanam (14). However, a late collapse saw Parks' innings end at 201 all out in 44 overs.

In response, Parks quickly removed Chingford's dangerous opener Zahid Qaderi for a duck in the very first over, courtesy of a well-executed run-out by colt Tanay Shetty. This brought to the crease their talisman, Bernard Storm, who had smashed a century in the previous encounter between the two teams. Parks, aware of Bernard's strengths on the leg side, set a strategic field to trap the big-hitting South African at the boundary line. However, returning pacer Aman Patel (10-2-30-2) had other plans and bowled Storm for 23! This was a huge turning point in the match. With the score at 40-2 and their key batsman dismissed, Chingford shifted to a defensive strategy from the 17th over onwards, aiming to salvage a draw.

Sensing an opportunity, Parks' skipper adopted an aggressive approach with field placements and bowling changes. Upen Sanga (13-6-14-4) led the charge with an impressive spell, dismantling Chingford's defensive lineup, while Tanay Shetty (7-2-15-1) provided valuable support with his left-arm spin. Despite managing to squeeze in an extra three overs towards the end, Parks could only secure eight wickets, with Chingford holding on to finish at 117-8 after 44 overs. For Chingford, youngster Mano Biswas was the top scorer with 43 at the top.

For Parks, this was a well-fought draw that earned them 11 points and secured fifth place on the league table. With four overs games remaining, Parks are now well-positioned to push for a top-three finish.
