Hutton v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 29 Jun 2024 at 12.30pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 3 Wickets

Match report In a clash between Oakfield Parkonians 3rd XI and Hutton 3rd XI, Hutton won the toss and elected to bat first. At the time, it seemed like a good toss to win on a good batting surface in almost perfect conditions - bright blue sky, warm temperatures, and no wind.

Parks made a great start, picking up three early wickets thanks to aggressive stump-to-stump bowling by opening pair Janeban S and Aman Patel. Hutton took their time to stabilize their innings, with three batsmen scoring 50+ in the middle order - Luke H, Alex H, and young veteran Graham Spooner. Tenacious and calculated batting, combined with some sloppy fielding and plenty of dropped catches from Parks, resulted in Hutton posting a solid 251 in their allotted 50 overs - scoring almost 100 runs in the final 10 overs. Aryan Desai Jnr was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for only 37 runs.

In response, Parks got off to a steady start after losing young talented opener Ayaan early. Chetan Patel (33) and Akhil Patel (34) played some eye-catching strokes before a succession of quick wickets brought Captain Fazan Habib to the crease. Having not scored many runs this season, the captain was under pressure to perform, and with the score at 84-4 in 22 overs needing another ~170 runs in 23 overs, many thought Parks would adjust their mindset to try and secure a draw. However, this was an opportunity for Fazan to lead by example and practice what he has preached to his team all season - to play a positive brand of cricket even when the odds are seemingly against them. What followed was a truly remarkable knock - Fazan counter-attacked by taking on Hutton's spinners and hit some monstrous sixes (five in total) down the ground to swing the pendulum back in Parks' favor. Supported well by Nikhith (18), Janeban S (27), and Aryan Jnr (13) at the end, Fazan Habib was able to guide his team to a memorable victory by arguably playing his best innings to date - finishing on 91 not out - successfully chasing down a target of 252 with 2 overs and 3 wickets to spare.

This was the best triumph of the season so far for Parks - snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Improvements in the field and catching departments need to be made, but Parks are starting to find a rhythm and will be going into the next game at home vs South Woodford full of confidence.
