Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 2nd XI v Fives & Hernonians on Sat 13 May 2023 at 12.30pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won By 12 runs
Match report
Oakfield Parkonians 2nd xi played their game of the season hoping to start how they ended last year. New skipper in Matthew Holland lost his first toss of the season and Parks were put into bat on a soft pitch in overcast conditions.
Parks didn’t get off to a good start losing 2 wickets in the 9 overs for just 26 runs. But Faisal Bhatti (60) and Janagan Vijayanathan (24) steadied the ship and built a little partnership to steady the ship. Faisal carried of his fine form from last year, scoring lots of 1/2s and then putting the bad ball away to the rope. Janagan’s dismissal bought Sarankan skandoorthy (30) to the crease and he with Faisal started to increase the run rate. 3 quick wickets bought Alan Bouquet (37*) and Jonathan Balakumar (26) to the crease. These two really did change the momentum of OPCC innings with a 60 run partnership of just 7 overs. With the pitch starting to get back and dry out Parks new they would have to fight to win the game.
Fives lost one of their openers early on however, this didn’t halt them in the chase of 246 runs to win. Parts couldn’t seem to catch or bowl straight, with a total of 38 wides and 8 drop catches Oakfield felt the game slowly drifting away from them. Despite the poor fielding and wide balls when the OPCC bowlers got it right they seemed to pick up wickets. With a wicket just before drinks things seemed to be happening in favour of Parks. With 23 overs left in the game Fives needed 128 runs with 6 wickets remaining. The introduction of spin twins Navine Sureshan (9-0-33-1) and Prajen Kavinkumar (9-0-40-2) changed the game. With a run out to dismiss the opening batsmen, the pitch turning and bouncing and the energy around the ground turning in Oakfield favour, they started to believe. Going into the last 5 overs more spectators came to watch an exciting finish to a game with Fives and Heronians needing 32 runs but with 2 wickets remaining it really was anyone’s game. DROPPED! The chance goes begging, a dropped catch on the boundary put more pressure the Parks bowlers knowing they can’t afford to bowl any more extras. 2 overs remaining, 14 runs needed, still with 2 wickets remaining. WICKET! Finally OPCC take a boundary catch and what a catch it was. Now going into the final over Oakfield Parkonians had 13 runs to defend still not over yet. RUN OUT! Game is over and Parks get their first win of the season and sit joint top with Hutton after 2 games just the start we wanted.
