Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI v Horndon on the Hill on Sat 15 Jul 2023 at 12.30pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 128 runs.
Match report
After last weeks disappointing draw against Benfleet and the same bad weather around, Oakfield Parkonians were looking to go back to winning ways and try and force a result today against a strong Horndon on the Hill side who were sitting one place ahead of us in the league. Skipper Paran lost the toss and was asked to bat first, this was someting that Parks were happy with as if we had won the toss we would have batted first due to the uncertainity with the weather and we wanted to avoid another situation like last week. We got off to a good start with the openers seeing of the moving ball and ran well between the wickets and put away the bad ball, which was tough in such windy conditions. We lost 3 or 4 wickets in a cluster and needed to rebuild and not allow Horndon back into the game. With the cluster of wickets it bought Adil Zareef (106) to the crease and for those that were watching and part of the team, it was an excellent innings from the number 5. He counter attacked in style hitting some absolutely huge sixes but also nurdling the ball around and running tightly between the wickets. He was setting up an early declaration and the rate he was going we could reach 270/280 and give ourselves plenty of overs to try and get 10 wickets to get our first 25 points of the season. He was well supported by Viraj Khagram (32) and Om Thakeria (17) lower down the order allowed us to get to 259 within 48 overs and thats when Paran called the boys in for a declaration meaning Horndon needed 260 from 47 overs and gave us 2 extra overs to get 10 wickets.
For the start of the second innings not much had changed with the conditions. It was still very windy and the ball was going to be moving around a lot, just like the first innings. Opening bowlers did well to battle the wind and continually run in and try to get the breakthrough. Vib picked us up an early wicket and he tends to do most weeks, and this gave us the little opening we needed. A change from one end and Om was bought on and he bowled really well. Figures of 10-0-38-5 doesn't do his spell justice. He mixed up his speeds very well and bowled to the field and plan that we discussed. In what was seamer friendly conditions it was good to see a spinner dominate and it was a pleasure to watch him get his first 5fer for the first team and the first of many we hope. He was well supported by Adil who came on and picked up 3 wickets within his 4 over spell and we were able to bowl Horndon out for 131 inside 30 overs. It was an excellent win for the boys and the first 25 points of the season and we hope to build on this win next week against Old Southendians.
