Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 5th XI v South Woodford 4th on Sat 14 Aug 2021 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report Parks hosted South Woodford in a game for the ages. Both teams played hard competitive cricket, with Parks just nipping them to the post in the last over with three balls to spare. This is what grassroots cricket is all about.

A minutes silence was held before play to remember South Woodfords keeper Stephen Hall - who had batted beautifully and stubbornly in the first game between the sides this season to hold out for a draw. Stephen passed away earlier in the week at the tender age of just 26. SW wore black armbands and their skipper Ravi Rawal said a few words.

Parks, having won the toss invited SW to bat. Demonstrating the depth of talent at Parks; Inder and Thomas opened the bowling with tight lines and great lengths; quite literally taking over from Aryan and Syed. This was business continuity at its finest. Beating the bat and regularly taking wickets. Within this, not to be beaten Garfield showed his class on a difficult pitch in his 27 run knock, playing cautiously whilst also trying to up the run rate.

An attacking fielding display saw Vijay ‘the panther’ Vijayanathan dive to stop a delivery in slips, throwing the ball immediately back at the stumps for a direct hit and dismissing Matty on 5. Amanjit set a high standard in the outfield, sliding to save runs whilst the scorecard also reads: Bowled Desai, caught Desai. Young Aayush taking a technically perfect catch at square leg to dismiss Rob for 9 off his dad Amar's bowling - the stuff of dreams for a father & son.

On 90 for 7, Parks were looking to close the SW innings below a hundred but a rear guard fighting stand between Waleed and Rajesh saw SW end their innings on 148 in their 40 overs. The tail enders played beautifully to give their team a competitive total on yet another inconsistent difficult Hainault track. A number of dropped catches - albeit difficult chances - had cost 30-40 runs.

Parks, opening with Amanjit and Thomas, looked set to build a good foundation but to demonstrate how hard a batting track it was, Amanjit was out caught by the wicketkeeper gloving an innocuous delivery that rose sharply and glanced his glove. Young Aayush was caught by a stunning catch at deep leg slip by Rajveer than even left the catcher speechless. Amar, coming to the crease showed his patience for a fighting knock of 22 to settle the innings yet again. The soft dismissal of Mr Fing brought Inder to the crease. Cue, 4’s and 6’s in his rapid game changing 37. He played the perfect innings on a difficult track and along with Amar they brought Parks to well below the required run rate. Looking to chase down the total with Inder, Bal kept the run rate ticking along giving SW a chance a minute and mocking them as they fluffed them. A flurry of quick wickets following Inder’s departure to a stunning catch from the SW skipper Ravi, saw Parks needing 5 runs of the last two overs. Vijay again, showing composure and experience guided the team towards the total despite a heart in the mouth moment when Subhash was nearly run out in the last over trying to take a suicidal single when the scores were tied - but thankfully SW's keeper didnt have the ball in hand when he sent the stumps flying. Cutting confidently of the 3rd ball of the final over, Subhash hit the winning run to secure victory . As close as both teams would like to come with a win possible for either team and a tie possible with eight balls of the game left.

Next week Parks take on the excellent Wanstead 6thXI side looking to avenge a defeat earlier in the season and give ourselves a mathematical possibility of promotion.
