Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 5th XI v Chingford 4th on Sat 31 Jul 2021 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Last weekend’s loss to Chingford personally hurt me a little. It was a great game, and Parks put up a good fight showing battling spirit, but it was one of those matches where the cricketing gods weren’t favourable. And we needed their support this weekend.
Parks lost the toss and were asked to bat on another inconsistent pitch at the Recreational Ground – the right decision and one the skipper was gearing up to make. Needless to say, I’ve since spent the coin I used for the toss.
Uneven bounce, a slow outfield and disciplined bowling from Chingford reduced Parks to 18-4 with the top order losing their wickets cheaply. Akhil, Thomas and Samuel steadied the ship as much as they were able, with Kaj showing his sound front foot technique and head for pressure, to help Parks to 103 all out. Most definitely 60/70 short of where the skipper wanted to be. Credit to Chingford’s opening pair of Van Arkel ( 8-1-16-3) and Z.Syed (14-7-19-1) who swung and moved the ball to trouble the bat.
You would think 103 is an easy run chase, and I’m sure that’s what Chingford felt too, but this is where Parks soul came to the game. S. Arora ((13-3-27-4) and Syed (7-1-14-3) took up the challenge, mirroring Chingford’s bowling with consistent lines and aggressive bowling. S. Arora again showed his class with tight lines and swing – enough to draw the shot which is the pillar of swing bowling. Young Syed, on a hattrick at one point, was eager to continue attacking but age group restrictions was a barrier the skipper couldn’t overcome. I could sense the disappointment in his stride. Reducing Chingford to 54-7 brought Parks back into contention to defend 103 and take away 25 points. Sadly, a formidable rear-guard action from Butcher (25*) supported by Z.Syed (21*) took Chingford home to victory. I’ve replayed the game in my mind since such was the disappointment. Sometimes you have to accept defeat with grace because the opposition held their nerve and demonstrated their ability.
Despite the loss, there is lots of be proud of. Sure, Parks were 60/70 runs short of where we wanted to be and the team acknowledge that, but for the bowlers to step up and come so so close to defending a marginal total (2 more than Aman made on his own last week) spoke volumes about the way the 5’s approach their cricket – aggressive with the ball and aggressive in the field. These boys don’t give up a victory easily. Every man attacked the ball; they were vocal, enthusiastic, energetic, and supportive of each other. Their attitude in losing was as valuable as their celebrations in victory. Playing alongside lads who won’t accept defeat is the best part of my weekend regardless of the result.
