Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 64 runs

Match report After a resounding defeat and poor performance last week, Old Parks entertained league favourites, Wanstead who were sitting 2nd in the league. Old Parks lost the toss and were invited to bat on a damp wicket. Wanstead openers bowled excellently and remove Sifth (0) early on. V Handa & Brathwaite tried to repair the damage but Handa(8) departed with the score on 23. OPCC needed partnership and managed to build 2 significant ones. Markatis (23) came in intent on putting pressure on the bowlers. He batted intelligently and ensured that the bad ball went for four. The partnership with Brathwaite of 48 dragged OPPC back in the game. B Mann then came in playing with confidence, as he done has all season. He struck 2 sixes and 2 fours, and the partnership yielded 45. Mann (27) & Brathwaite (39) were out in quick succession which sparked a collapse from 114-3 to 126-9. A cameo by Navneen Vijayakumar (14) boosted the total to 141oa.
OPCC knew that they had to bowl well to make a game of it. The bowlers responded magnificently, not only bowling well but by bowling superbly. Sifth & Navneen set the tone and bowled extremely well and never let the batsmen settle. Their line and length remained consistent, and they were well backed up by the fielding and some brilliant wicket keeping by Markatis who bagged 5 excellent catches. Nav finished his spell with 7-1-10-3 which include bowling the dangerous Adnan Akram. A great effort for one so young. This brought on Seth Malik, playing in his first match of the season. He just continued the squeeze with figures of 8-4-9-2. Sifth Ali put in a massive shift bowling 14 successive overs. He had every batsman in trouble moving the ball both ways. There umpire state that he was making the ball “talk” He finished with figures of 14-1-38-3. Dillan Patel (.4-0-5-2) was brought on to mop up the tail, with he did in ruthless fashion, taking the last 2 wickets in his only over. Wanstead were bowled out for 77 leaving OPCC winners by 64 runs.
OPCC went from deflation to elation in a week. We must not get carried away and should approach all our games with a similar attitude and mindset. We go to league leaders Chelmsford in a much better frame of mind. This will be a good test for us.
