Horndon on the Hill v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 53 runs

Match report Oakfield Parks traveled to Horndon on the Hill who were a handful of points behind us in the table. We also wanted to carry on our recent good run. Captain Dave Rai remarkably won the toss and chose to bat in sunny climate.

Things did not start well as Parks slumped to 9-2 with both openers back in the hutch. Then some mediocre umpiring saw more wickets tumble. However, Dave Rai promoted to number 3 stabilized matters with a composed 30 of 52 balls to avert a total slump and consolidate matters to some extent. This allowed the lower order some chance to fight back and so it happened. As Paresh Kalley coming in a more suitable number 7 flourished in seeing us to a good total with a well crafted 44 of 71 balls. Paresh played a vital knock and showed what qualities he had, he also contributed with the ball. He was ably supported by others like Anujan Thiru. However, the cherry on the cake was Tarunpreet Bhatia with a late flourish of 19 runs of only 18 balls to propel us to a somewhat respectable 175 on a pitch offering help to bowlers. The only disappointment was we did not bat the full 50 overs but saying that after the first 10 overs we would have grabbed 175 with glee.

After a hearty tea, parks knew they needed their A game to defend only a modest total. Thankfully, parks were on it from ball 1 and life was very difficult for Horndon. The 2 opening bowlers were superb in their partnership together as Eshun Kalley and Selvam Ramasamy strangled the Horndon top order with superb new ball bowling. Selvam grabbed 6-1-27-2 as he found the edges. But Eshun was equally superb and was miserly in his spell consistently hitting the same areas like a machine to give them nothing to score of and only play and miss, he finished with amazing figures of 6.5-5-7-1 which included 5 maidens in a row. He conceded only 7 runs in his 6 overs and 4 of them were an edge through the slip area. Fantastic spell from Eshun who is even learning the art of patience! The follow up bowlers carried on the good work with Shawn Tuitt in particular bowling a solid 10 overs of spin on a pitch offering some assistance. He snared 3 wickets in 10 overs for only 38 runs. All the bowlers contributed in an all round display. However, with nerves jangling a bit and the dangerous Jeff West hitting well things looked dicey but Eshun came back on to clean bowl the number 11 and Parks celebrated a great win.

So a fantastic win pushing us up to second. It showed the great depth to our squad and quality we have in depth, the attitudes of all was fantastic and players called up fitted in great as team spirit was high. We look forward to going on a run to push on and host Orsett at home next Saturday in no doubt another tough fixture.
