Match report Parks 5thXI travelled the short distance up the road to Marathon Playing fields to face Wansteads 6thXI.

Wanstead skipper Chris Ley won the toss and elected to bat first. Young in-form opener Harith Wajid - fresh off a ton in his last game - fell quickly without troubling the scorers thanks to a excellent catch at short mid-wicket by Talha Raja off the bowling of Sachin Fing. Isaac Roe followed shortly afterwards to the same combination and this brought Wahid Mahmood to the crease to combine with opener Matloob Pracha (26) to bring some stability to the Wanstead innings. That partnership was eventually broken by Talha and an excellent catch by Gobi Jeevakumar sending Matloob back to the pavilion.

Young Talha (6-2-16-2) was again involved in the action as he removed the solid looking Wahid on 42 caught behind - just as the batsman was taking a liking to the bowling of Sachin Fing having dispatched several bad balls to the boundary. At the other end young George Evans patiently built an excellent knock of 56 not out whilst his batting partners came & went.

Thanks to some excellent bowling from Rashmin Patel - who was unfortunate not to take wickets despite creating two difficult chances that couldn't be held by the slip cordon - the ever dependable Andrew Beaven (9-0-41-2), and Gobi Jeevakumar (5-1-14-1) Parks were able to restrict Wanstead to 166 for 8.

A special mention must go to Thomas Varnes. His 13 overs went for only 36 runs and how he didn't take a bucketfull of wickets is beyond me - every delivery was quick, probing, aggressive and asked questions of the batsmen. The yorkers were incredible and it is to the batsmens great credit to have kept those balls out somehow. Thomas did get his name on the scorecard by effecting a run-out though. I get the feeling that Parks 5s will lose Thomas to a higher XI if he continues to bowl like this - and deservedly so.

After an excellent tea, Parks started their reply with a long overdue solid 1st wicket partnership. Bal Diocee unusually played out a maiden over and was outscored by almost 2:1 by Eshwar Khambam (106) who reached his maiden century at Parks. An excellent knock full of classy shots. No bad balls were wasted, and gaps were found with almost every shot. He was eventually removed as he tried to score the winning runs, meaning that Jeevan Chahal had to join the other opener to finish off the chase. Diocee finished unbeaten and hobbling on 53 after having kept wicket for the entire Wanstead innings and running more 1s, & 2s than the whole of the rest of the season combined - there was unbelievably even a 3.

Finally Parks posted a decent batting performance and will take that confidence forward into the penultimate game against Walthamstow next week. Whilst promotion is mathematically possible - it is unlikely unless Gidea Park+Romford are at the receiving end of a thrashing and then fail again badly in the final fixture against Parks. Who knows - but either way - this has been an incredible first season of league cricket for Parks 5thXI and the club are surprised and very proud of their achievement.
