Match report What can I say...

Those who wore the Old Parks shirts gave it their all on 31st August. The search for promotion is still on following (just...). We are checking with the league chiefs, but there could be a scenario where both Westcliff & Old Parks finish with equal points in 2nd if Westcliff beat Basildon in their crucial last game. If so, Old Parks would want a 20:20 decider :-), but doubt that would be sanctioned by the powers that be!

Coming onto the game against champions, West Essex, J Patel won the toss and looked to put a score on the board. Unfortunately, the gameplan didnt work out as it had for the majority of the season and Parks lost a wicket in the 2nd over. In fact the top order struggled and Parks were 83-5 off 17 overs and it felt like we were continuing our poor run of form. Short cameos by Jibran Azam (43) and Rushan Pandya (30) held the innings together, but Parks required one of the top 7 to push on but it failed to arrive. Credit must be given to West Essex's bowling which was tight, aggressive and wicket to wicket - the reason why they're champions. Anton Buntin (17) and Baldeep Mann (11) pushed on the score a little but Parks were bowled out in 43.1 overs and had it all to do. It was a head in hands moment, and there was dead silence in the dressing room as tea failed to arrive on time and we sat waiting...

Somewhat of an Al Pacino, Any Given Sunday, speech was given by the skipper and Parks new the whole season rested on the next 2-3 hours of cricket.

Haris Khan, who has been struggling for early wickets in the last few games, looked more pumped than usual and this fed through as he got a wicket with his 5th ball with a large snick to the keeper! We were off and running. Haris (10-2-40-4) and Amit Kalley (9-2-23-1), drafted in from the 2XI, bowled superbly and had West Essex on 32-3 off 9 overs. Skipper Jai Patel, then turned to the bowlers who he's relied on for much of the season, Shubhang Mehta (10-4-28-1) & Jibran Azam (8.5-2-32-2). Both toiled hard, but only managed to get one wicket in 12 overs as West Essex put on two steady partnerships. 100-4 and Parks had two overs until Drinks. Jibran Azam had got the previous breakthrough as Riaz (20, looking dangerous) spooned it strained to Anton Buntin who took a comfortable catch, and then some great fielding from Baldeep Mann who fired it into the keepr saw Zaleem (18) run out after looking good.

The drinks break came, a Dhoni style huddle followed, and Parks wanted it. A bottom edge catch to J Patel was the next wicket, Dhruv Patel then caught a superb catch at backward point and Haris Khan then bowled a yorker to take out the number 9. Park were at 110% firing at all cylinders. Unfortunately, the experienced Mughal came in and his 12 off 8 balls... Big swings unfortunately were edging to the Boundary! With West Essex 2 runs to win, Jibran Azam came round the wicket. Jai Patel moved to a 5 man leg side field and Mughal hit it straight to Haris Khan and went for the 2. Haris underarmed it in and J Patel whipped off the stumps and thought he'd won the game, not realising in the heat of the moment that a single had already been taken. A short moment of celebration, followed by a realisation, that the match had been tied.

Emotionally drained, the Old Parks laid on the field and were consoled by their supporters who watched this exciting game of cricket. It really was one of the best games the players had been involved in and the reason we all love league cricket. The result fell short by 1 run..

The hope still remains for promotion, but we must rely on league rules & Westcliff beating Basildon. We can still dream and fight until the end of the season. And believe me, we will.

M.o.M; Haris Khan
