Match report OPCC 6th XI lost to OPCC 5th XI by 4 Wkts

History was made as the OPCC 5th and 6th XIs faced each other in a league fixture for the very first time. With regular skipper unavailable, stand-in captain Manicks Shankar won the toss and, on a hot and humid afternoon, chose to bat first.

The decision looked a good one as the dry pitch and lightning-fast outfield gave the batters every opportunity to enjoy themselves. After losing the openers cheaply, Shohaib Ahmed provided the perfect platform with a patient and composed 32 before debutant Sayem Ahmed announced his arrival in style. His superb 64 came at a brisk pace and included 9 boundaries and 3 towering sixes, giving everyone a glimpse of what looks to be an exciting talent.

Not to be outdone, youngster Arayaman Parida, playing only his second game for the club, produced a mature unbeaten 56, peppering the boundary with 10 fours and 2 sixes. Lower down the order, club veteran Balvinder Diocee rolled back the years with a cameo full of T20 flair, treating spectators to reverse hits, adventurous charges down the pitch and an entertaining 19. The 6th XI closed on an impressive 236 for 8.
For the 5th XI, experienced campaigner Vijay was the standout bowler, returning excellent figures of 7-0-26-2 and reminding everyone that accuracy never goes out of fashion.

The 5th XI's reply began cautiously, and two early wickets from Arayaman Parida (4-1-37-2) gave the 6ths plenty of encouragement. Number three Nimaka De Silva threatened to take the game away with a quickfire 26 before falling to a beautifully disguised slower ball from Mazam Ali (3-0-34-1).

There was further reason for the 6ths to smile as debutant Sayem Ahmed capped a memorable all-round performance by claiming two wickets with his off-spin in a single over (1-0-8-2). Bat, ball and plenty of promise, he looks a genuine talent and a fantastic addition to the club.

However, cricket has a habit of saving its biggest performances for the final act. Wicketkeeper-batter Aayush Desi played a magnificent innings of 98, striking 18 boundaries and 2 sixes in a match-winning display. Just two runs short of a deserved century, he guided the 5th XI home in style and ensured bragging rights would remain upstairs... at least until the return fixture!

With more than 475 runs scored, countless boundaries, and plenty of laughs shared between teammates wearing the same coloured caps for one afternoon, it was a fantastic advert for OPCC cricket. The 6th XI can take enormous pride from their performance, while the 5th XI showed the experience needed to chase down a formidable total. On this occasion the better side edged it, but the real winner was the club itself.
