Match report Oakfield Parkonians 2nd XI secured promotion to Division 1 with an excellent run chase away at Old Southendians, successfully chasing 298 in the final game of the season.

With a win needed to guarantee promotion, Parks were first tasked with containing a strong Old Southendians batting performance. The hosts posted 297/8 from their 45 overs, with Hafiz Yawer Afzal leading the way with an excellent 138 and Harry Clarke contributing 65.

Despite the sizeable total, Aman Ali produced a superb spell of 5/56, picking up crucial wickets and helping prevent Old Southendians from pushing well beyond 300. Tanay Shetty also bowled well (1-36) keeping his economy tidy on a flat deck.

Parks therefore required 298 to win and got exactly the start they needed through Viraj Khagram. Viraj went on the attack immediately, smashing 81 from just 36 deliveries, including nine fours and six sixes. His innings took a huge chunk out of the target in very little time and ensured the required rate was firmly under control from the early stages. It was another destructive innings in an excellent season for Viraj, and gave the rest of the batting order the perfect platform from which to manage the chase.

After Viraj’s departure, stand-in skipper Faisal Bhatti took responsibility for holding the innings together. He went on to make an unbeaten 115 from 114 balls — his first and century of the season, and what a time to get it. With promotion on the line, Faisal batted through the innings and ensured Viraj’s explosive start didn’t go to waste. He was joined by Surya Narayanan, who continued his strong form with another important contribution. Surya struck 73 from just 53 balls, maintaining the momentum through the middle overs and putting Parks firmly in control of the chase. After Surya departed, Mannan Arora added 11 before Eshun Kalley joined Faisal to see the side over the line, completing an excellent chase of 298 and confirming the 2nd XI’s promotion.

The victory capped off an excellent campaign for the Oakfield Parkonians 2nd XI, with contributions coming from across the squad throughout the year and promotion thoroughly deserved. Next season brings the challenge of Division 1, where the standard will be high. The aim now is to build on this season, keep improving as a side and carry the same confidence into the step up and see how high we can go!
