Match report The 2nd XI travelled to Colchester seeking a crucial victory to close the gap on the promotion places.

Colchester won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch that looked ideal for batting. Openers Krishan Dilipkumar and Faisal Bhatti got the innings off to a flyer, putting on a brilliant 157-run opening stand inside just 23 overs. Faisal was in particularly aggressive mood for his well-compiled 94, milking the spinners and punishing anything loose. He fell agonisingly short of his first ton of the summer, but maintained his fine form with a seventh league fifty, taking him past 650 league runs for the campaign. Krishan played the anchor role expertly for his 63, rotating the strike and picking off some handsome shots through the leg side. Following Faisal's departure, Viraj Khagram maintained his spectacular touch with a magnificent 68, including ten fours and a six. A late flourish from Gowtham Sanga (30*) allowed Parks to declare in a strong position on 317 after 45 overs, leaving Colchester 50 overs to chase it down.

Colchester’s reply began brightly as Manith de Silva and Oscar Morton-Morley reached a fifty partnership in quick time. Selva Ramasamy was excellent as always, picking up three key wickets, but Morton-Morley proved stubborn, falling just short of a century for 90 while finding the off-side boundary with ease whenever anything was pitched slightly short.

With the match appearing to drift towards a draw, Austin Brook turned the game on its head. Batting with real intent, his unbeaten 94 off just 75 balls guided Colchester over the line with a single ball to spare.

In truth, it was a disappointing effort in the field from Parks. A lack of discipline with the ball and below-par fielding ultimately cost the side the win required for a promotion push. Attention now turns to next week's crucial home fixture against Hadleigh.
