Match report Oakfield Parkonians suffered a disappointing nine-wicket defeat against Westcliff-on-Sea CC on Saturday after being bowled out for just 108 and then watching the visitors cruise to victory with more than 16 overs to spare.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Oakfield would have hoped to set a competitive total, but a combination of disciplined bowling and regular wickets prevented them from building any meaningful partnerships. The innings never truly recovered after an early setback when B Anwar fell for just one with the score on 9. S Chaudhry and R Karunakaran briefly lifted the scoring rate with positive strokeplay. Chaudhry led the way with 27 from 26 balls, including five boundaries, while Karunakaran contributed an aggressive 18 from 17 deliveries. Their efforts helped move the score to 48, but when both batsmen fell in quick succession, Westcliff sensed an opportunity and tightened their grip on the contest. The middle order struggled to gain momentum as wickets continued to tumble. M Dinayadura was dismissed without scoring, while U Choudhry (9), N Sureshan (7) and E Kalley (10) all made starts but were unable to convert them into substantial contributions. The defining spell came from Westcliff seamer C Mortimer, who produced an outstanding performance with the ball. Mortimer ripped through the batting line-up, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 29 from nine overs, including two maidens. He was well supported by M Farooqi, who claimed 3 for 46, while S Adley and J Robbins chipped in with a wicket apiece. At 78 for 8, Oakfield were in danger of being dismissed for a very low score, but a determined lower-order effort added some valuable runs. T Bhatia scored 11, while P Kalley remained unbeaten on 15, striking three boundaries and helping push the total past the 100-run mark. Ultimately, however, 108 all out from 32 overs left Oakfield with a significant challenge ahead.

Defending a modest target, Oakfield needed early breakthroughs to put pressure on the Westcliff batting line-up. The bowlers worked hard and eventually found success when T Bhatia removed S Kamal for 17 with the score on 58, courtesy of a catch by U Choudhry. Unfortunately for the home side, that proved to be the only wicket of the innings. Westcliff opener S Vijayakrishnan anchored the chase superbly with an unbeaten 44 from 77 balls, ensuring there were no further hiccups. He was joined by A Shukla, who played the more aggressive role, finishing unbeaten on 36 from just 32 deliveries, including three fours and two sixes. Oakfield's bowlers battled throughout, with Bhatia returning the best figures of 1 for 15 from four overs. E Kalley, S Ali, R Karunakaran, N Sureshan and P Kalley all rotated through the attack, but Westcliff's batsmen remained in control, helped by 12 extras as they steadily closed in on the target.
Westcliff eventually reached 109 for 1 in 23.2 overs to secure a comprehensive nine-wicket victory and collect the full 20 points. For Oakfield, it was a difficult afternoon with both bat and ball, and the side will look to bounce back quickly by turning promising starts into substantial contributions and building partnerships that can form the foundation of a stronger total in future fixtures.
