Match report Parks hosted their first home game of the season against Ilford 5th XI and successfully chased down the target of 278 to secure their first win of the season.
Ilford, led by former Park player Umar Arbar, won the toss and opted to bat on a dry, green pitch. Despite losing 3 early wickets, a solid partnership between Fahad Abbas and Ali Hader Ahmed steadied their innings. The pair turned the score around from 81 at the drinks break to 271 before Ali Ahmed, who had been dropped on 32, retired after scoring a blistering 105 off 70 balls (including 10 sixes and 6 fours). Fahad Abbas was unbeaten on 105 when Ilford’s 40 overs came to an end, with Ilford posting a total of 277 for 3.
Parks used eight bowlers during the innings, with Nav Kalley (8-2-28-1) the standout performer. Manish Gaikwad and Vijay Vijayanathan each took a wicket. Although Manick Shankar bowled well with good line and length, he was unlucky not to pick up any wickets. Despite early breakthroughs, Parks need to sharpen their fielding, especially in the latter stages of the innings, where opportunities were missed, allowing Ilford to accelerate and set a high total.
In reply, Parks started brightly but lost their most reliable batsman, Mark Gargar, early when he was run out for 22 in a mix-up with Waqar Yousuf. Amar Desai came in at number 3 and provided solid support to Waqar, who looked in vintage form, dispatching the bad balls to the boundary. After Amar's departure, Fahad Yusuf joined Waqar and together they put the Ilford bowlers to the sword. Fahad played a brilliant knock, hitting a fluent 50 before he was forced to retire due to an injury sustained from a bouncer. Gurmit Bhatia, replacing Fahad, started slowly but played an important role in supporting Waqar, who carried on his fine innings. Waqar reached 111, including 3 sixes and 17 fours, before being dismissed LBW.
With the game still in the balance and Parks needing more than 12 runs per over, Fahad Yusuf made a crucial return to the crease, smashing 4 fours in an over before being caught for a brilliant 70.
With Parks needing 6 runs from the final 3 balls, Aman Patel sealed the victory with a stunning six off the penultimate ball, securing the first win of the season for Parks.
It was a thrilling encounter, with Parks chasing down a challenging target of 278. Although they stumbled at times, the performances of Waqar (111) and Fahad Yusuf (70) were key, and a dramatic finish saw Parks edge home for a well deserved win.
