Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Sunday A XI v Waltham CC on Sun 25 May 2025 at 1pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost By 18 runs

Match report On a warm but windy day the Sunday XI had their first home league fixture of the season against a strong Waltham side.

Skipper Krishan Dilipkumar lost the toss and Waltham elected to have a bat first. An opening attack of two contrasting bowlers, with the accuracy of Idrees Ali and the pace and bounce of Sheharyar Chaudhry meant that Waltham initially struggled to get going in the first ten overs, with some disciplined bowling. Sheharyar Chaudrhy it must be mentioned bowled some seriously good balls including a brilliant Yorker to remove the opposition opener. Yet the entry of the Waltham number 3, the former Parks player Adil Zareef, proved to be a major turning point in the match. With some excellent hitting against the spinners, he raced to a brilliant 100 before retiring hurt with injury. Chances were offered, but very few were taken in the field and this proved costly as it meant that Waltham were able to recover from a tough start to a strong score of 236. Credit must be given to the spinners who toiled hard on a flat surface and gave it their all in attempting to limit the run scoring.

As the side went in for tea, with the pitch being a good one to bat on and the lightning quick outfield also playing a role, Parks were confident that they could give the total a good go.

Openers Krishan Dilipkumar and Waqar Ul-Imam went on the counter to begin with but after a quick start Parks fell to 32-2. Yet Sheharyar Chaudhry and Navine Sureshan steadied the ship and put on an excellent partnership of 90 and looked in total control with excellent rotation of strike and boundary hitting, with great manipulation of the field. Yet as so often is the case as drinks came, momentum swayed again and the loss of Sheharyar Chaudhry for a well made 52 left the game in the balance. Navine Sureshan continued well and hard and brought up his second fifty of the weekend, with a highlight being a big six into the bushes. Yet after his departure the innings faltered with there being some resistance from Chamara Jayawadena and Ramesh Manickavasagan. Parks eventually fell short and were bowled out for 218.

It was a tight loss after a fabulous win last week yet it highlighted the importance of fielding well as if catches were taken the game could’ve easily ended in our favour. We look forward to our next game in a months time against league leaders Upminster.
