Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Rainham on Sat 01 May 2021 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 30 runs

Match report On a freezing cold day 4ths entertained Rainham CC for the second and final friendly of the season. Parks skipper Shanks won the toss and elected to bat considering the the run-fest from the previous week on the same pitch.

Parks opened the bating with a new pair ( Colt Nikhil and Maran) and both batsman made a good start and made light-work of the wayward bowling attack by Rainaham. Nikhil in particular was in punishing mood and put away any bad balls with ease and went on to make a fluent 48 with 3 sixes over fine leg. Ever reliable Maran on the other end batted in his usual sensible mode and scored a well crafted 43 before running himself out (once again) with score at 100 after 15 overs.

Number 3 batsman Fazan missed a straight ball and made way to the previous week’s destroyers Bhavik and George to enter the arena and to pick up where they left off. The runs started to flow fast and furious once again. Both went on the attack and George made a quick 49 and got caught at deep cover. Bhavik took his innings well into the 33rd over scoring a well made 74. Parks ended the 40 overs with 272-6.

Knowing on that flat track any score less than 300 is hard to defend, parks opened the bowling with the regular openers Nav & Shanks. The opposition team had a very good batsman in Rana, who from ball one showed his intend with some attacking shots. However both the opening bowlers managed to keep a lid on things giving away only 67-2 after the first 16 overs (Shanks: 8 overs 19 for 2 )

The follow up bowlers did their part but a fast outfield helped the batsman to keep the runs flowing. Maran bowled with pace and kept the run rate in check but was unlucky to pick up any wickets (8 overs, 39 for 0). George Christian came in after the 20th over and bowled very well to picked up 5 wickets (8 overs, 48 for 5) to make things difficult for the opposition team’s plans.

At this point, the opening batsman Rana was still going strong (dropped many a times) and made a commendable but scratchy 162 (he should insure his bat's edges) before getting out caught behind to Gurmit’s blistering pace. By this time with 40 runs to chase and only 4 overs left the match was well and truly over. Raingham ended their innings with 242-9.

This match was a good challenge to the team and showed up number of areas to improve before the league starts. Especially fielding and catching which used to be a strength of this team in the previous seasons.

4ths will start their league campaign next Sat against Upminster 5ths at home.
