Match report After a COVID19-hit 2020 season it was great to start a new season on time. with a new captain, new wicket and new ambitions, Oakfield Parkonians (Parks) opened with a friendly against our old neighbours Frentford. With the ground looking resplendent, Markatis won the toss and elected to bat on this bright sunny day. Brathwaite & S Ali formed a new opening partnership and flourished against some good tight bowling. Ali started particularly well playing an array of well executed shots. With the score at 83, he holed out in the deep for an excellent. Brathwaite started more circumspectly, but grew in confidence, and unleashed some magnificent shots. V Handa (13) came in for a short cameo but was unluckily dismissed when a top edge loop over his back and rolled onto the stumps. This brought young M Arora to the crease. He looked comfortable and helped keep the momentum going before departing for a well-made 24 with the score on 147. Brathwaite then reached a well-constructed half-century. A mini collapse followed, with H Shah (4), Brathwaite (62), L Coates (1) & H Markatis (1) falling in quick succession. However, a brilliant recovery was led by Sarankan (22*) and S Handa (50*). Their running between the wickets was excellent and Handa’s brutal striking of the ball was great to watch. This partnership helped set a difficult target for the visitors.
Frentford openers were stunned by the hostile opening attack of S Handa & T Bhattia and had no answer to the pace and accuracy. S Panda, combined pace with accuracy which was too much for the opposition. S Handa finished with 3 wickets. I Iqbal, struggled for line and length but took the wicket of there most dangerous batsman. H Shah, with blistered fingers bowled admirably and finished with a couple wickets. Serankan also bowled excellently to help himself to a couple wickets and keep Parks in control of the match. Frentford finished on 225-9.
An excellent first outing for the 2s where everyone had the opportunity to get involved. Let’s hope we can improve on this performance and that availability allows us progress and challenge for the 2s Premier league this season.
