Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI v Benfleet on Sat 08 May 2021 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs.

Match report A rain delay start to the season meant that there was a lot of waiting around to do for the first team in their first league game against Benfleet. Skipper Paran Kalley lost the toss and was asked to bowl first on what was bowl friendly conditions. Selvam Ramasamy (8-1-42-3), spearheaded the attack for Parks, his line and length was immaculate and should've had a wicket in the first over if it wasn't for a drop catch. However, after this Benfleet started to find their groove on what seemed a very good batting track. Parks were poor in the field and put down a lot of chances which allowed Benfleet to grow into the game. But Sahil Handa (4-0-24-1) brought some raw pace that the Benfleet batsmen didn't like and he found the breakthrough due to a very good catch by Ali Iranpana. The pitch began to turn and bounce sharply and Ravi Raval (7-1-33-2) was the pick of the spinners getting the ball to do all sorts and one amazing one handed catch from Paran helped Parks fight their way back into the game. At one stage it looked as if Benfleet would get well over 250 but some good death bowling and tight fielding meant that Benfleet were restricted to a par score of 215. This is something that Parks felt was gettable.

The chase got off to the worst start with Parks being 0-1 after a mix up between our openers. However, Dhruv Patel (23) and Raihan Hussain (34) consolidate the innings well, the ball was moving around a lot and slow outfield meant it was hard to put the Benfleet bowlers away. The man inform Janagan Vijayanathan (50) was then brought to the crease and manoeuvred the ball around well. Hitting yet another 50 he steered the innings well and with 10 overs left it saw Parks needing 84 runs with 6 wickets in hand. The next 5 overs Benfleet began to dominate and pick up regular wickets. Tarunpreet Bhatia (16) and skipper Paran (45) were able to get a partnership together and looked like they would steer Parks to victory as what was 53 off 5 quickly became 19 off 18 balls. But Benfleet came back again and what seemed to be an easy finish Parks became even harder with Benfleet taking 2 wickets in 2 overs meaning Parks needed 9 off the last ball with skipper Paran at the crease still. Ali got a single off the second ball of the over and it was over to the skipper needing 8 off 4 balls. A big wild swing targeting the ball boundary was missed by Paran and it meant Benfleet won by 7 runs and had bowled Parks out. Overall, the fielding from Parks was poor and well below the standards we set ourselves. Had we fielded better than the outcome may have been slightly different. Nevertheless, there was a lot of positives to take away from this performance and Parks now look to their next game against Gidea Park which is a huge game for the team.
