Match report On this historic day for English cricket Springfield won the toss and decided to bat. Two maiden overs from Talha Raja (7-2-19-0) and a wicket over for Jamie Bailey got the home side off to a good start. A second wicket for Jamie (6-0-29-3) in the sixth over had the visitors reeling on 11 for 2. However fortunes began to change and a 38 run partnership followed for the third wicket, a clean bowled from Zayd Ahmed (6-0-41-1). This brought B. Reynolds to the crease and a 68 partnership before Praven Sureshan (6-0-41-2) took the first of his two wickets. Reynolds continued to control the innings until the introduction of Amanjit Singh (3.4-0-14-3) in the 34th over, a well held catch by Zayd saw the batsman depart on 91 with the visitors on 198 for 7. Zubair Raja (7-0-49-1) was the only other bowler to take a wicket, a stumping by Samuel Varnes. Springfield were all out in the 39th over with the score on 227.

Oakfield reply got off to a poor start with both opening batsmen back in the pavilion with the score on 14. A number of the batsmen got into double figures; Talha (16), Sujeev Suganthan (15), Samuel (11), Amanjit (13) and Ali Khan (19) but none were able to go on and get a big score and were always shy of the run rate. Wickets fell at regular intervals and once Zayd departed on 26 the tail soon followed. Oakfield were all out after 34.4 overs with the score on 151, a win for Springfield by 76 runs and a sporting contest with respect for the opposition shown by both teams. This early finish had the benefit of allowing both teams and their supporters’ to adjourn to the pavilion to support England for the conclusion of the world cup final.
