Fives and Heronians 4th v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
So, an overcast day at Chigwell School, on a batting track, Parks won the toss and decided to bowl. A tactical move to take advantage of the conditions because not only did we have Aman Patel (7-2-20-2) and Thomas Varnes (6-1-33-0) but we also had Nimanka De Silva (5-0-19-0), Yash Patel, Andrew Beavan (2-1-10-1), Parven Sureshan (7-0-32-2) and Vijay Vijayanathan (6-1-22-1).
Fives began very cautiously. Perhaps the bowling was too strong, which it was, because Aman Patel took the first wicket in his first over, J Thurston caught and bowled for nada. After 20 overs Fives were just under 70 runs. Aman bowled like a pro, beating the bat and hitting the keepers gloves hard. Young Amanjit Singh was outstanding behind the stumps. Nimble, diving left and right. Fearless and confident. Yash at the other end kept it steady with figures for 7-1-26-0. Parks kept the fielding tight, Yash dived in the outfield like he was competing against Tom Daley. Besides a small scattering of boundaries, Fives struggled to put runs on the board until T Sherwani came to the crease. Cavalier shots and throwing caution to the wind took them to 167 for 7 at the close. We felt it was perhaps 30/40 runs too many given our ability, their captain, at the end of the game, felt Fives were 20 runs short. No mate.
Here come Parks.…Andrew set the tempo with measured watchful innings until he dragged on for 12, while young Sujeev again showed his class with the most delightful front foot press and drive I have seen. Low to the ground, knees bent, elbow high. It was classical like a Mozart symphony. Unfortunately, Sujeev was bowled for 8 by the perfect yorker. The bowler couldn’t have delivered it any better and Sujeev won’t face another, on the balance of probability. Had it not been perfect, Sujeev would’ve blocked it like he was going through a morning routine before school, he was that untroubled. Sachin Fing came to the crease at 3. Played himself in for 19 until he gloved a delivery and WALKED. I’ve capitalised this for a reason. That paved the way to showcase Parks’s talent. Not only did young Aman keep well, he also batted with maturity and sensibility. Leaving balls, playing bad ones and lofting another to the boundary because it was in his slot. I really am surprised by how unfazed he is batting, bowling or keeping.
After losing Amanjit (solid 29) and Vijay (14 but no clue what he was doing so I can’t even describe his dismissal) it was the Nimanka De Silva show. Coming in at 7, after Yash was LBW for a golden (LOL!), and Parks potentially staring defeat in the face, he took the fight to Fives. Running quick between the wickets, playing carefully and rotating the strike, he not only protected the opposite batsmen (Praven Sureshan) but also took charge. He played the perfect innings for 38 n.o. He was ably supported by Praven, who admitted his heart was beating at pace as the run chase came down to 15 off the last 12, and 4 off the last 6 after a disastrous bowling change by Fives. Without these two talents, keeping themselves and Parks afloat in the deep end, we may have lost this game. You can’t fault the way they protected their wicket and combined to bring the team home with 5 balls to spare. 168-8. Job done. A shout out to Nimanka for his match winning knock!
