Upminster 5th v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won By 94 runs

Match report Another week, and another must win match. Parks captain as usual lost the toss and was invited to bat first by the opposition.

Parks did not get off to a good start, loosing Bhavik in the 2nd over and soon after Farzarn in the fourth. Vice Captain Maran came in and joined Chetan, both playing cautiously but unfortunately both Chetan & Maran were removed in the 10th & 13th over respectively. At this point Parks were tottering at 35 for 4 and required a steady partnership, which was provided by Amar & Keerti who between them occupied the crease for 10 overs, pushing the score to 60, before Amar was adjudged to be out LBW for a important 13 in the 23rd over. Keerti at this point was joined by Captain Gurmit, with both batsman playing well; Gurmit playing very cautiously and Keerti playing with positive intent went onto put together a crucial 62 run partnership before Gurmit was out in the 38th over for 22. Parks at this point were 122/6, knowing that 150 plus would be defendable on this wicket. Keerti went onto remain not out for a superb 61 runs, and in conjunction with some late runs from Nimanka & Shanker helped Parks to end its inning at 159 of the allocated 45 overs.

Parks having played at this ground before and defended low targets were cautiously confident of doing the same today. However, what transpired was not envisaged by any.

Parks opened their defence with Anuj & Shanker. Anuj bowled well with the new ball and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket (7-3-10-0). However, today belonged to Shanker who bowled 12 straight overs and captured 9 opposition wickets for 29 runs. Yes 9 wickets! It was indeed a pleasure to have witnessed a fine display of back to basics line & length bowling. Shanks took his first wicket in his first over and the ninth wicket in his 9th over (overall the 18th over) but was unfortunately not to have got all ten wickets. With the opposition nine down in the 18th over Parks were expecting a quick finish but the last wicket partnership for Upminster had other ideas and went onto frustrate Parks for 16 overs. Parks Captain tried different bowlers, each trying their utmost best. In the 35th over a worried Parks Captain turned to Chetan who with his second ball managed to remove a very stubborn number 11 batsman, and by doing so sealed a 94 runs victory for Parks, but more importantly 25 crucial points, keeping us top of the league with a 16 point cushion over the nearest rivals West Essex going into the last match of the season.
