West Essex v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 25 Jun 2016 at 1pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
With the West Essex pitch waterlogged, a bit of pre-weekend discussion saw this league fixture held at Oakfield (on the second square). Both West Essex and Oakfield both wanted the game to go ahead and were keen to fight for the win, despite the weather challenges.
Foley won the toss and put West Essex into bat on what was a very soft & green-top wicket. This was a good toss to win, with rain forecast throughout the day.
The decision immediately paid off with U Aslam (9-2-23-3) taking two glorious wickets in the first over. The first was a jaffer, swinging away and hitting the top of off stump and the second beat the batsman for pace, taking an edge which was parried by V Handa in second slip to J Foley in first. Parks were on the ascendancy. Regular wickets tumbled and S Ali (8-0-24-2) also joined the action with some tight seam bowling. With the keeper standing up it limited the batters ability to negate the swing and Parks seemed to have their tactics spot on. A middle order resistance by O Afzal (75) and U Raja (20) built a partnership for West Essex, but a quicker ball by A Ali (9-2-42-2) and great catch by D Patel brought the game back into Parks favour.
As the game was repeatedly stopped due to rain, thunder, lighting & a little bit of hail stone, the Parks bowlers did well to complete the innings and the fielders were brave to carry on in the conditions and take 10 wickets. West Essex were reasonably pleased with the target of 181 to chase, knowing the run rate and potential rain would mean Parks would have to be ahead of the rate.
Parks started the chase, with the calculations already made. 110 from 20, 130 from 25, 148 from 30 and 163 from 35 overs! Parks started poorly with Skandamoorthy (0) being bowled in the second over. Both D Patel's started well, with Dilan (34) opening due to having to leave early and Dhruv (22) in his first game back for a while. Both batted well, and Parks were 50-1 from 13. With the run rate in question, Dilan was bowled and Foley (18) and Handa (16) came in and delivered some lusty blows. Parks reached 107 from the 20 overs, only 3 runs behind. Thereafter Paresh Kalley (42*) and A Ali (24*) saw the game home, keeping ahead of the run rate (being regularly briefed) and playing the big shots when required. Despite the regular rain intervals, Parks managed to bat 31.3 overs scoring 171, comfortably ahead of the target 151 required.
A good wicket for Parks, despite the best efforts of the weather gods to ruin the game.
Good contributions all-around, but a joint MoM from U Aslam, who bowled fantastically well to take the game by the scruff of the neck right, & Paresh Kalley, who carried the innings home, stood out. Despite the wides & a few drop catches in the slips (conditions were poor), the bowling and fielding was decisive.
