Hutton v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 12.30pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost By 61 runs
Match report
Oakfield Parkonians were away this week at picturesque Hutton in Brentwood and on a perfect summers day all was set for a good game of cricket. Parks lost the toss for what seems like a regular occurrence and were inserted in to the field.
The opening bowlers started well and bowled economically with little being given away. Both got early movement to trouble the Hutton top order with young Anujan Thru giving a fine account of himself after his call up from the 2s. A few catches went down but these were not in the straight forward category, so not too much blame could be attached. After the opening salvos, Parks spinners came on to really tighten things and wickets eventually began to fall and the pick of the bowlers was Ramya Upadhyay who was excellent with variations in pace to collect 3 wickets for 27 runs of his 10 overs. With Hutton struggling at 120-5 at not a very quick run rate, things looked good and looked like the Parks would restrict the opposition to no more than around a score of 175. However, Hutton’s Tom Patterson had other ideas and came in at number 8 to plunder 52 of 31 balls in a match changing innings to propel Hutton to what at one point seemed an improbable 233.
The track was still good and so Parks fancied chasing it down but like in any game of cricket a decent score on the board always provides a test. Hutton opened up the bowling with Zimbabwean first class player Carl Mumba and he grabbed the early breakthroughs with 2 of our top 3 dismissed by him. Sometimes you have to just give credit to an opposition player and this was such a case as the opening few overs were of top quality and so he got the rewards he deserved. However, despite this Parks rallied, led by young Paran Kalley with a magical piece of willow. He played some spectacular shots to score 48 of 44 balls and missed out on a deserved 50. His knock propelled Parks forward to 96 -2 at great run rate and put us in the driving seat. However, this is when things fell apart as from 96-2 Parks slumped to 108-6 and this was poor, as wickets fell regularly at a time when batting had become less difficult and with the run rate excellent, all that was needed was to occupy the crease. Some late resistance from Dave Rai to score 30 of 47 balls gave some hope but in the end he was last man out as Parks slumped to a tame 172 all out.
This was a disappointing result but we were beating by a team which simply played better on the day and credit to Hutton who played the game hard but in a great spirit. However, with Parks promotion hopes seemingly in tatters, news came through that Gidea Park had also lost, so Oakfield Parks sit 4 points of 2nd place and all to play for and if Parks win all the remaining games they go up, so it’s in our hands. We play local rivals next week Hainault and Clayhall at home, in not just a derby match but must win in terms of promotion hopes.
