West Essex v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 11 Aug 2012 at 1.00
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost by 91 runs
Match report
And so the day of destiny arrived. Lose this and Old Paks promotion hopes would officially go up in smoke. The cricket gods seemed angry with Old Parks 1st team over the last few weeks, with last ball thrillers not going our way. It was suggested that a sacrifice should be made to appease them, a canditate was asked for, no one came forward. Does this symbolise the lack of team men in the team? I am sure it was mentioned pre season about doing everything for the team. Where are the selfless players required? Me thinks the cricket gods remained angrier then ever at the snub.
On what looked an absolute belter West Essex were put in and asked to bat. Old Parks then attacked the West Essex batting line up with more zeal then the GB team in pursuit of gold(the olympic theme must continue). Ejaz Khan bowled a devestating spell, unsusally backed up by accurate catching. Well it was captain Dave Rai really, whose glove work was his aid with 4 catches. Although we even took another sharp slip catch from soon to be married Harris Khan(well actually 3 years from now, yes I am also amazed he found a girl)in his first catch for the 1st team this season, he has had no other chances of course. Ejaz rifled through West Essex to pick up a fabulous 7 wickets. Thus they were bundled out for 139, leaving us a modest 140 for victory with lots of overs to get them in.
Sitting there at tea needing 140 from a zillion overs on what seemed the best batting track of the season. It seemed that victory would surely be gained. Tea was munched gleeflully by the Old Parks players in anticipation of the task ahead, there was even glorious talk of going to the olympics on time at the prospect of an early victory. What could possibly go wrong on this wonderful day?
And so the Old Parks opening pair entered the fray with a combined age of 36. The fearlessness of youth would be the start we needed. Then 4 balls later Shane Vamadevan departed to the ball of the century(even better then Kirandeep Bansal's ball to scalp Icky, Bansal now thats a name from a bygone age) with a ball pitching outside leg and searing to hit top of off. Unlucky young man, but you will live to fight another day. This was the start of an almighty collapse of England v West Indies(for you younger chaps it was from an age were the windies would run through england like knife through butter) proportion from the 70s and 80s. The two west essex pacemen were bowling like men possesed, with relentless pace and accuracy in a fine display. That being said, could no one rise up to fight back and deny them, to dig in and say no more? Well apparently not as wickets fell at regular intervals, usually 1 an over. A pathetic display that at 28-8 had the skipper writing out his resignation speech and reaching for the suicide pills. Hang on, don't take the pills but sacrifice yourself to the angry cricket gods, show the lads what being a team man is all about. No one say that was the first good idea he had all day!! Poor shot followed poor shot, apart from ex pirri pirri 500 contender James Foley who left a straight one. Harris Khan who looked supreme and looked our only hope then ran himself out(good friends with Baldeep) and all hope was gone.
And so 48 all out in 20.2 overs was a shocking display that even had Peter Nightangale the manager entering the dressing room to give the lads a much deserved dressing down. Yes the West Essex pair bowled well, with Gafangaf getting 6 wickets(not as good as Ejaz and his 7 though, so take that West Essex) bowling superbly, but 48 all out, no way!
Where to go from here? For some it was of to the olympics as they thought at tea, nice and early, just not how was expected. So next saturday is a home game and another defeat looms. Or does it? Cricket is a funny old game and we may suddenly turn it around and win, just don't bet on it.
