Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI v Old Brentwoods (50/50) on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 12.30
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 42 runs
Match report
It was a blustery start to the day, with seemingly gale force winds in operation. We arrived at the game, which after 2 straight losses was even at this stage a must win game against table topping Old Brentwoods, who had put in some very powerful wins this season. The need to deliver and get a result was the talk before the game.
The toss was lost and Old Brentwoods had no hesitation inserting us in perfect swing bowling conditions, no doubt the fierce wind was going to aid extravagant movement. We got of to a steady if non spectaular start in tricky conditions, with the need to keep wickets in hand with a strong batting line up the mantra. After seeing the new ball bowlers off, Rizwan Sadiq entered to play a power house knock of 122, featuring seven 6s. This was his first league ton for us and featured some tremendous hits. He was supported superbly in 2 notable partnerships, with debutant Jibran Azam scoring a solid 34 at a vital time. Then Numan Khan in the second partnership, came in to finish the innings of in a run a ball 45, which was superbly constructed with well placed shots and good running.
We felt that 277 was a good score and showed what we can do when we focus on batting the 50 overs. However, we knew that Old Brentwoods had posted some big scores this year and would have some batsman capable of causing serious damage if we did not bring our A game in the field.
Just like last week we started sloppily with our bowling attack not hitting the right areas. It must be said that the wind had now died down and the sun had come out to make good batting conditions. Old Brentwoods started positivley with both their openers batting well, with O Chaudhry constructing a fluent 74. However, despite their good scoring, they were always just behind the rate and we knew if we could keep picking up wickets the pressure could build. Harris Khan got the vital first break through with a change of ends and an aggressive second spell. Then Kirandeep Bansal got the big breakthrough, clean bowling I Singh who is Old Brentwoods danger man with his quality batting. Wickets kept coming, with Daud Arghandawi coming on to bowl another disciplined spell to turn the screw and also snaring Chaudhry. Daud bowled zero wides, which in a match featuring 69 wides showed how accuratley he bowled. By now the run rate was rising, Rizwan Sadiq then came on to to crank up the pressure and dry up the runs to put the opposotion under extreme duress. The wickets started to flow and we bowled them out for 235 to win a tough game by 42 runs.
This was a great win, against a very good team and has put our hopes back on track. However, the challenges keep on coming as we travel to high flying Harlow Town who are in 2nd place.
