Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won 88 Runs

Match report Old Parkonians completed their second win in succession with a thumping 88 run win against Leigh-On-Sea at Oakfield in SNEL division two on Saturday.

Despite the margin of victory, the success wasn’t secured until the last ball of the match when colt Glen Sasikaran had James Elliott trapped in front for his second wicket of the match to add to his earlier hard hitting 22.

The seasiders won the toss and made a wrong decision by inserting the hosts as runs flowed steadily all innings. Bobby Curtis and the returning Ed Buxton (after his studies at university) opened with 79 for the first wicket. Buxton hit a crisp 48 and Curtis 26 before both fell caught and bowled; the later to James Elliott who went onto capture 5-78.

Kris Bostock (27), Baljit Singh (44) and captain for the day Phil Butchart (21) kept up the scoring rate with useful knocks before Sasikaran and Kevin Hughes (32) smashed quickfire innings to propel Parks to a commanding 249-8 declared from their 52 overs as 63 runs were plundered from last 60 balls.

Parkonians then made regular breakthroughs during the Leigh innings and soon reduced their visitors to 94-7 after 32 overs. Nick Thorpe (1-45), Paul Robbins (2-38), Butchart (1-14 from 11 overs) and Paul Warren (1-9) were the chief destroyers to leave the old boys on the verge of another win.

However, the Leigh batsman didn’t give up tamely as Giles and Steve Elliott added 49 for the eighth wicket. In the quest for the final three wickets, leg-spinner Kris Bostock came on for a rare bowl and quickly captured two wickets in as many overs to leave the score standing at 146-9 with six overs remaining.

But thanks to Sasikaran, who took 2-25, it was not until the final ball of those six overs that Parkonians were able to claim an impressive 88 run victory as they were made to fight all the way. As a result, the side move up to fifth and visit Walthamstow this coming weekend.
