Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost 48 Runs

Match report Old Parkonians fell out of the SNEL Cup on Saturday, but not after giving relegated Walthamstow a run for their money, losing by 48 runs to their fellow division two league opponents.

The visitors won the toss at a sunny but windy Oakfield and decided on first use of an excellent cricket wicket. It looked to be a bad choice as Paul Robbins ran through the top order in claiming 3-23 from his 9 overs to leave Stow in huge trouble at 27-3 after 10 overs.

But enter Mike Harris, who went on to finish the innings unbeaten on a workman-like 116 from 152 balls with seven boundaries. He was ably supported by Rob Oram (50) in adding 126 for the fourth wicket and Tim Cartwright (43) sharing 63 for the fifth.

That allowed Walthamstow to reach a commanding 247-5 from their 45 overs, with Aussie Phil Butchart (1-25) and Nick Thorpe (1-53) the other Parks wicket takers.

A steady start to the run chase was then given by Baljit Singh (joining from Gidea Park) and Bobby Curtis, before Singh fell to Greg Harris with the score on 33-1 after 11 overs.

That led to a mini collapse as Kris Bostock (13), Butchart (run out for 0), Paul Robbins (13) and Matt Jarvis (2) quickly followed as Parks were in danger of a huge defeat at 92-5 after 25 overs.

Jamie Abbott joined Curtis to add exactly 50 for the next wicket, before the later fell for a good 52 from 89 balls and with Paul Stolworthy soon joining the out batsman in the pavilion, the chase looked a loss one at 152-7.

Only some meaty strikes from Kevin Hughes, who smashed 30 in 23 balls with three sixes and Abbott’s 41 in 43 deliveries gave the score line some respectability with a stand of 45 for the eighth wicket as Parks were soon all out for 199 from 41.1 overs to lose by 48 runs.

Despite the defeat, another encouraging performance from the old boys, as they enter the league campaign this coming Saturday at home to Hutton in division two.
