Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club News story

JACK TROTMAN

16 Aug 2007

We have received the sad news that Jack Trotman has passed away. He had just enjoyed his 90th birthday and had been in hospital for a short time.

We believe Jack was the oldest surviving member of OPCC. He was Club Captain in the 1950s but left the Barkingside area in the late 1950's to take up residence in Surrey. He always followed the Old Parks’ fortunes with a keen interest. In later years, Jack became President of Chipstead CC who play in the Surrey League. As well as being a leading member of the Cricket Club, he was just as well known for his contribution on and off the pitch for OPFC.

Jack was a contemporary of players such as Jack Kent, Tony Levi and Len Glassberg and saw active service in the RAF during the war, piloting Mosquito fighter/bombers. Indeed, Len recounts a true story of when Jack was in Malta in the latter part of 1942. The ship on which Len was serving was aerial torpedoed in the Med. escorting a convoy to Malta. After the war, Len pulled Jack’s leg about there being no sign of the RAF protecting them at the time. But Jack’s reply was that he recalled escorting Len part of the way as the crippled ship limped its way back to Alexandria!
