Horndon on the Hill v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 13 May 2023 at 12.30pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 32 runs.
Match report
With the weather being horrible for the first league game, Oakfield Parkonians started the league campaign against Horndon. Parks lost the toss and were put into bat on a soft wicket, with conditions favoring the bowlers it wasn't a toss that Parks wanted to lose and the batsmen knew that they would have to dig deep on that wicket. Parks started off well but the pressure of dot balls and inconsistent bounce as well as the slowness of the wicket troubled a lot of our batsmen. 30-1 quickly became 80-4 after 20 overs and Parks weren't in a good position. But when Adil Zareef (45) and Skipper Paran Kalley (62) came to the crease we showed a bit more control. Adil was the aggressor of the two, he didn't allow the spinners to settle and took the attack straight back to the bowlers. Adil departed shortly after drinks, but Paran batted with class. He rotated the strike well, soaked up the pressure when needed and hit some beautiful shots over midwicket on multiple occasions. At one stage getting over 200 was going to be a tough ask but a few cameos down the lower order meant we finished on 234 which Parks were happy with, they felt the score was well above par and with the wicket not changing a huge amount meant it will be tough for Horndon too.
Parks started the second innings off well, picking up early wickets. But then Horndon found their way into the game, they were aggressive and really made use of the powerplay. Adil and Tarun Bhatia bowled with control and good variations and pace. The batsmen struggled to deal with Taruns pace and how quick he rushed the batsmen, Tarun picked up the wicket of their number 3 which was huge for the game as he was the aggressor of the two. Parks picked up wickets on regular occurrences after that but this didn't stop Horndon from scoring so freely. Our bowlers bowling a few too many bad balls allowing the batsmen to take advantage and put the pressure back onto Parks. But Tarun was the pick of the bowlers, 9 overs 4 wickets for 46 runs, 3 of those wickets being the last 3 to win us the game with 6 overs to spare. Picking up 2 in 1 over bought us back in the game, but Horndon were getting closer and closer to the total. But Tarun bowled really well and with good pace and won us the game. It was an excellent start to the 2023 league season for the first team and we hope to continue it against Old Southednains next week.
