Match report Oakfield Parks won the toss and decided to field first on a hot and sunny afternoon. This proved to be the correct decision as our opening bowlers, Ryan Karuna Eshun Kalley, soon reduced Woodford Wells to 34 for 4 wickets in first 10 overs. Bhavdeep Sehmi then came on first change and his superb spin bowling reduced Woodford Wells to 74 for 8 wickets and looked like the Wells would not reach 100. The umpire gave a run out in the 21st over and Woodford Wells almost lost their ninth wicket but playing within the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ OPCC’s captain and wicketkeeper, Eshun asked the batsman to return back to the pitch as he had knocked the bails off without the ball in his glove. Ryan was brought back into the attack to finish the game off but the Woodford Wells’ tailenders had other ideas as they accumulated 70 runs for the 8th wicket partnership before Bhavdeep broke the dangerous partnership and the Wells were soon all out for 149 all out in 33.2 overs. Oakfield made things difficult for themselves by letting the tail wag and the pick of the bowlers were Bhavdeep with figures of 6.2-0-20-4 and Ryan with 8-0-39-3.
Chasing 150, the Oakfield openers did not start too well and were soon struggling at 21 for 3 inside the first 10 overs and with not much depth to batting the target of 150 was looking huge. However, thanks to excellent partnership of 78 off 15 over between Eshun and Bhavdeep (similar to their efforts in the semi-finals) reduced the target to less than 50 to win, Bhavdeep was out for 10 caught and balled. Another two of wickets fell in the space of just 30 runs and exposed the Oakfield tail but Om Thakeria dug in and supported his skipper and OPCC won this trilling final by 4 wickets in the 34th over. Once again, the star of the batting show was Eshun who finished on 104no and he struck a huge six to reach the target and score his century and remained in complete control throughout the innings and steered Oakfield to a famous victory in this very prestigious competition.
It was a tense game worthy of a cup final and there was exceptional team spirit on both sided and support from spectators and parents was outstanding with applauses and whistles right throughout the game.
