Match report Oakfield were looking to get back to winning ways following last week’s loss at Gidea Park & Romford. Skipper Subhash Patel won the toss and decided to bat on a strip that looked a bit suspect; the adjacent strip, used last week, was full of cracks large enough to lose your hand in!

Bal Diocee and Shahid Khan opened the innings and were looking good until Shahid was caught behind on 9. This brought Tariq Jameel to the crease; Tariq then proceeded to give a batting masterclass, a 47 run partnership followed before Bal was out bowled on 31 after being surprised by a ball that kept low. Tariq became the 5th wicket to fall when on 83, bowled by another ball that kept low, with Oakfield on 169 in the 33rd over. Of the middle order only Inderjit Singh looked comfortable until he was also bowled by a low bounce when on 33. Samuel Varnes saw out the innings which closed after 38.1 overs when Chairman, Nav Kalley nursing a dodgy knee, was stumped driving through covers with the score on 207.

Following tea the Oakfield bowlers set about the task in hand, Nav (6-1-30-0) and Sachin Fing (8-0-39-3) made a steady start with 3 wickets for 57 after the first 10 overs. There are no poor balls if a wicket is the result; Sachin’s second wicket was a loose ball which pitched half way down the track only to be hit high by the batsman and into the safe hands of Shahid, an apology followed! With

P, Grundy and G, Barnacle at the crease Hornchurch were looking comfortable and were scoring freely until Shahid (7-0-36-3) took the first of his three wickets, his dazzling spin catching P. Grundy plum lbw. The run out of Hornchurch’s skipper, G. Barnacle, by Faizan Habib was the critical wicket Oakfield were looking for. Hornchurch were on 150 for 5 off 30 overs, needing 58 off the 10 remaining overs. Faizan (7-0-32-0) and Tariq (3-0-19-0) ensured this would be a tight finish,

Hornchurch required 5 runs from the final over. This was entrusted to Faizan, bowling a good line and length left Hornchurch requiring 1 run to win from the final ball. The ball whistled through to keeper Samuel Varnes; the batsmen ran and with great awareness the keeper threw the ball at the stumps at the bowlers end, Faizan backing up whisked off the bails – match tied!
