Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 2nd XI v Old Southendians on Sat 23 Jul 2016 at 1pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost 4 wickets

Match report With a top of the table clash, Parks were confident with a batting line up able to get a big score on a good looking wicket. Stand-in skipper, J Patel, won the toss and elected to bat hoping to give Old Southendians a big score to chase.

We started well, and despite the loss of 1 wicket, were 88-1 from 11 overs with Sachin Vara (74*) firing on all cylinders. Unfortunately Sachin had to retire hurt after he smashed 30 from 12 balls, after a back injury. That disrupted the momentum Parks had created and a steady flow of wickets occurred thereafter with many of the batsman playing lackadaisical shots which got Southendians back into the game. Parks drifted to 99-4 until a good 46 run partnership between U Rafiq (36) and A Kalley (29) steadied the ship. Amit was then caught by a one handed stunner and another wicket fell immediately after and Parks found themselves 141-6 from 27 overs with 18 overs to go. U Rafiq and J Patel put on another 45 runs and Parks were well placed for a final onslaught. S Vara came back to the crease after Patel departed and helped smash 56 runs in the last 5 overs. Parks finished on a respectable 251 from 45 overs all out, slightly short of the target but defendable nonetheless.

The challenge was going to be defending a total from a team that had chased every target set this season, with 4 players in their line-up having already scored season tons. Unfortunately E Johnson (the Australian overseas) proved his class again with his fourth ton of the season to guide the away team to victory.

Despite Parks toiling in the field and working hard on a hot day, the Australian batted flawlessly giving no chances in a start to finish innings. After A Thiru (9-2-21-2), who was the stand-out bowler, took an early breakthrough getting rid of the dangerous Valaveetil (11) with an absolute jaffer Parks felt they had a chance. Anujan was bowling with aggression, control and pace and every over brought out many near misses. A steady flow of wickets kept falling but each batter gave the Australian support and Parks weren't able to cut out the bad balls and unfortunately gave Southend enough scoring chances to keep the run rate ticking along. Despite taking 6 wickets, it was a game of misfortune.

Injuries hampered Parks batting momentum and also meant we had to effectively field with 10 men (given Vara could barely move from slip to slip). Some spirited bowling from A Kalley (9-1-42-1) and D Patel (9-0-55-1), especially in his first spell gave us hope along the way and if one some luck had gone our way things could have been different.

Onwards and upwards to next week and a lot of the players will be looking to step up to beat Belhus on their own patch, on what is always a glorious batting track.
