Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI v Old Southendians on Sat 21 May 2016 at 1pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 12 runs
Match report
A cloudy day in East London saw a thriller between the two newly promoted sides, Oakfield Parkonians and Old Southendians. The stage was set for an entertaining encounter as Old Southend Skipper won the toss and without any hesitation put Parks into bat on what seemed like a slow wicket. Openers Faisal Bhatti and Glen Sasikaran went out with a purpose but Glen(2) soon found himself walking back to the pavilion. Faisal kept on the pressure on the bowlers as he took the attack to Old Southend’s overseas. But he soon found himself hitting one too many. Faisal(35) walked back in despair as he looking set to score a big one. Haris was joined by Ramya but was soon hard done by a ball that cut in sharply taking his off stump. Parks found themselves in trouble as skipper walked in to steady the ship. Haris continued with his impressive form as skipper, Jibran, took the attack back to opposition and launched a monstrous six over long off. The six was followed by another one over mid-wicket but trying to replicate the same shot Jibran was caught at mid-wicket having made 30 at that point. Parks were relying on Haris to continue as he found himself batting with the lower order. Haris departed having made an impressive 80 and parks finished on an a decent 218 for 9.
The total looked defendable but skipper was wary of the opposition batting. Openers started well and put on a fine partnership before Craddock (29) was run out by young Aman Ali. Bowlers found it hard as it started raining with strong wind and ball was difficult to grip. But a master stroke from skipper paid off as he brought on Abdul (left arm spin) from one end. Runs dried up as batsmen were trying to keep up o the required rate. Eshun Kalley was brought in to replace Selvam Ramasay whose first spell did not not yield any wicket. The 14 year old had their best batsmen dancing in the crease as he kept line and length and bowled with good pace. Several balls went past the edge frustrating the fielders but this did not affect the 14 year old as he bowled one on a good length while Rob Johnston (40) who tried to beat the infield only managed to give Glen a catch at mid-off. Game was on at that point and Parks sensed a victory. Abdul carried on bowling a tight line while skipper kept rotating his bowlers on the other end. It all came down to the last two over with 18 needed. A run out caused erratic celebration in field. Only one wicket needed for a win with 7 balls remaining. Selvam Ramasamy, ever so dependable, ran in hard with all his energy and bowled a perfect Yorker to send Parks to an emphatic victory.
Parks celebrated but what a game of cricket everyone witnessed. Credit to the opposition for their effort. It is always nice to play against Old Southend.
