Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 9 runs

Match report Oakfield Parkonians recorded a 9-run victory over Mayfield, in their opening Middlesex & Essex Invitation League game of 2014.

Offered first use of a very flat track at Oakfield, on a day more reminiscent of mid-July than May, the Parks prospered, with James Foley and Sunday A debutant Maran Mariyathas leading the scoring. After the early loss of Dilan Patel, Foley (95) dominated a fine stand with father his Stan, then shared a hard hitting partnership with Mariyathas (46*). James played a number of fluent early season strokes, clearly greatly enjoying the excellent batting conditions. Quick-fire contributions from Shahid Khan, Kumaran Ravendradas and Ronan Karuna saw Parks declare on 213 for 5.

The innings was marred by an unfortunate (and very painful) injury to Shahid - we wish him a speedy recovery.

In reply, Nimanka de Silva struck with the very first ball of the innings, but Mayfield then made steady progress towards their target. In the last hour, the run rate increased but wickets began to fall regularly, Dilan Patel in particular benefiting from safe catching in the deep.

Femi Efthymiou stood out (hobbled, rather, with a runner for most of his innings) for the visitors with a well judged 46 that took Mayfield tantalisingly close to their target.

For the visitors, Sammit Patel was left stranded on 60* as Mariyathas marked his début by claiming two wickets in 8 deliveries, both caught in the gully by skipper Andrew Beaven, to see Parks home by 9 runs and with 10 balls remaining.

A tightly fought contest, played in a sporting but competitive spirit, on an excellent pitch in fine weather. What more could we hope for?
