Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 1st XI v Woodford Green on Sat 28 Jul 2012 at 1.00
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
Both teams arrived feeling it was a must win game. As we were up against a high spirited Woodford Green who had a close win the previous week. What now proceeded was a thrilling match, as exciting a game as seen at Old Parks.
We were inserted in to bat on what seemed like a good deck. We got of to an electric start with runs coming at a rocket pace, Usain Bolt style(had to mention the olympics somehow). The returning Rushan Pandya who had decided that sitting on the couch every saturday was not as fun as he first thought and Jibran Azam opened up and looked good before as per all our opening partnerships this year falling quickly. Unfortunatley as quick as the runs were coming, we were also in traditional manner losing wickets as well. The thing of steady long partnerships and batting the opposition in to the ground do not seem part of the game plan this year, as flamboyance seems to be the mantra of our batters. Nevertheless Rizwan scored an explosive 46 of 33 balls before finding a wandering cow corner who seemed by luck to find himself were the ball ended up. 15 year old(have to keep mentioning how old he is to emphasise how talented he is) Vikram Handa then had a good partnership with Wasim Khalid to get us going again. Vikram showed he was totally at home against some good pace bowling on a livley wicket, before he was run out. There was some dispute who was out, with Vikram trying everything to persuade the umpires it was Wasim and Wasim trying everything to persuade the umpires it was Vikram(what great team spirit we have). The umpires made the correct call and Vikram walked of in a huff mumblimg it was not me out. It was also the second game in a row Wasim has been invloved in a run out, some thing to ponder me thinks.
Wasim batted with class to get 37 and surely a big knock is around the corner for him. One day our immense on paper batting line up is going to click and skipper Dave Rai who dreams of the moment that he can think about declaring, will wave his hand in imperious fashion to call the boys off to put the oppo out of their misery. Will the dream happen for him one day? Well we all live in hope. Anyhow back to the living world and wickets started to tumble quicker then Drogba in the penalty box. With James Foley ex piri piri 500 contender succumbing to a tame dissmisal and Baldeep Mann deciding to run himself out before even facing a ball for a diamond duck. Well at least he now knows what a diamond duck is and has furthered his cricket education, we look for all kinds of positives in these moments.
Thus it was down to the last pair of Dave Rai and Anton Buntin who were joined together on a hopeless 160. Anton returning after his travels overseas to the far east, batted with composure with his captain, who after each over wanted to give vast amonts of advice which Anton wisely seemed to ignore. Both batted well and took the team to 191 in a vital last wicket stand of 31. A great partnership and a decent score. Some even commented it was a true captains knock in adversity, well actually it was the captain who said this but he willl stand by his words. He even managed to get a round of applause in the dressing room for his knock, someone please tell the boys to calm down as it was only 15 not out!!
We opened up with Ejaz Khan and 15 year old Vikram( have I mentioned before that he is 15??). Both bowled great in partnership with the young buck(no thats not you Ejaz) Vikram picking up 3 wickets due to the presuure exerted from both ends. M Sialvi batted superby to get 50 before a suicidal run Baldeep style got him, with great work from Adnan Aslam. Wickets kept falling but runs also kept coming in a tense thriller. We even managed a historic moment for the 1st team in 2012, as we took our first slip catch of the season after around 55 earlier chances this year. The hero of the hour was Wasim(no one mention the slip catch he dropped earlier in the innings) who claimed this moment of legend, there was talk of a statue being erected to remember the slip catch moment. Somehow the game came to the last over with Parks needing 2 wickets to win, a runout from keeper Rai meant the game went to the last ball, 1 wicket was needed but they also needed 2 runs to win. But then came the fumble in the field, the scrambled 2 runs and a famous win for Woodford Green.
Old Parks players slumped to the floor, while Woodford went bonkers at this amazing win. Then scenes which reminded all of Lee and Fintoff in the ashes of 2005, as both sides shook hands with 1 team in tears(well captain Rai was) and Woodford Green on top of the world. A sick in the stomach loss for Old Parks but it has to be said it was fantastic match played in brilliant spirit. Well done to Woodford Green who are a good bunch of lads and held their nerve to claim the win.
If you look up the phrase "Cricket was the winner" you see a picture of this scorecard. Well thats what they say but I feel awful!!!
