Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 2nd XI v Old Southendians on Sat 27 Aug 2011 at 1pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Old Parkonians 2nd XI beat Old Southendians at home by 4 wickets.

Parks fielded a young team, average age was 19 years with the youngest 13 years old, so it could be forgiven if they showed immaturity. But the reverse was trus.

Both captains knew that whoever won the toss would be fielding first and for once this went in the Old Parks favour. As both captains were walking back to the pavilion, the heavens opened making it likely to be even harder for the batsman when the game started after an hour and a quarter delay. Jonathan Balakumar (8.3-2-28-3) and Liam Lee (4-0-21-1) were not disappointed. Liam took the first wicket with a most relaxed caught and bowled. Jonathan continued bowling a splendid line and keeper Harry Markatis swallowed the finest of edges from a short delivery to snap up the second opener. It was time for the spin and Max Mukesh (11-5-22-3) had the batsman so tied up that even Houdini, the master of escapology, would of struggled to escape. Ian Simpson (7-0-19-3) came on and in his first over had taken 2 wickets to be on a hat-trick. However the youngster Sam Hodgson blocked out and was also the saviour for Old Southendians as he was the last wicket to fall after scoring 25 on a difficult wicket.

Towards the end of Simpson’s spell, Janagan Vijayanathan took a most remarkable catch diving to his left and Old Southendians were dismissed for 93 in30.3 overs. But on this rain affected wicket, it was going to be a challenge to get the runs.

It became all the more difficult as the rains crashed down during the tea interval. On the restart, opener Alan Bouquet was out for 9, however, Harry Markatis stayed there in his anchor role for an invaluable 15. The talented Janagan came in and stoked the ball around the ground picking up the singles. Parks had to come off twice during their innings due to heavy downpours.

When young Dhruv Patel came in to bat at number 8 with 15 runs required on a wet and soggy pitch, the ball was doing all sorts of wonders and Old Southendians probably thought they were in with a good chance. Yet Dhruv played a lovely pull shot which on any other summer’s day would have gone for 4, however they were forced to run hard to pick up a three. After this Janagan decided to finish the torment by hitting a 4 over the top of mid-wicket for the win, finishing on 45 not out. Parks had got to 95-6 in 36.5 overs. For Old Southendians, Dave Evans took 4 for 22 in 11 overs.

This was a terrific win by a very young Old Parks side who bowled, fielded and batted with remarkable determination and marvellous team spirit.
