Match report OPCC 4th X1 beat Upminster by 42 runs

Weather report for Saturday was promising and it actually turned out to be an average day. Nevertheless Parks were happy to be on the pitch for the first time in 2020. Host had prepared the ground much better than previous occasions and were pleasant oppositions. Over the last few season on this ground, Old parks struggled to put on a good score. It was important to put some runs on the board, that could be defended. Old Parks New skipper won the toss and opted to bat first, It turned out to be a good call. 

Wet pitch contributed to low bounce in the first innings. Newly promoted opening bat Subash with regular opener Chetan kick started the long awaited 2020 season. Game was interrupted every 6 overs for sanitising, as per guidance. This did interrupt the flow of the game. Safe distance was kept throughout.

Old Parks lost first 2 wickets in 7 overs.  Wise captain Maran’s partnership (80 runs) with VJ provided the base for a decent score on a difficult pitch, outfield was slow. Maran scored his 50 on 30th over and decided to retire so others could gain some time in the middle of the park. It did not workout as anticipated. Maran was called into action again on 37th over, as Old Parks lost 9 wickets for 147. Eventually Old parks finished the innings with respectable160 for 9.

Maran Mariyathas was the highest contributor (65) and he was well supported by Evergreen VJ (30). The next highest contributor was the Extras (25). 

Upminster’s mix of colts and senior players put up a decent performance and achieved total of 118 all out on 40th over. 

Bowling figures as below shows fairly even distribution of wickets. Pick of the bowlers being Amar Desai.

Parks started the bowling with Shankar Manicks & Yash who kept the  opening batsman at bay with some tight bowling. Parks skipper George made use of most of the bowlers available on the day.  Amar Desai finishing with best figures.  Accuracy, Pace and Aggression was lacking from some bowlers. This was a surprise as most bowlers seemed sharp during last couple of weeks in the nets. Parks were rusty on the field and were slow to react and anticipate. 

Overall it was a decent effort. Congratulations to all the players on Parks first victory of the season. Must remember we played a weakened Upminster team. As we found out recently current league structure has changed and we expect the standard to be much higher than 2019 season. We need to be sharp on the field, need the bowlers to start firing and all recognised batsman to find some sort of form to be competitive.

I am sad to inform that our good friend Chetan has sustained a serious injury during the game and has been hospitalised. It is likely he is going to miss most of this season. I wish him speedy recovery.
