London Tigers v Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 27 Jun 2015 at 2pm
Oakfield Parkonians Cricket Club Lost by 170 runs
Match report
After last weeks one-sided game against Goresbrook CC 5s where only the weather denied us a win, OPCC 5s found themselves on the wrong side of a one-sided game against opposition comparable to our 2nd XI.
London Tigers team in Southall consisted entirely of senior players against our own team that had 8 colts inexperienced in playing senior level cricket. There was only ever going to be one result, but OPCC 5s acquitted themselves well against much stronger opposition.
London Tigers won the toss and rather unsportingly decided to bat first - showing that their intent was purely to use this game as "net-practice" for their batsmen.
The pitch and outfield were frankly atrocious. Huge cracks in the pitch and an outfield that was the worst I have played on with "grooves" big enough to insert a hand between the strips of newly laid turf. Both were as hard as concrete and after 5 or 6 overs the ball looked as if it had been attacked with an angle grinder. After being hit in the jaw fielding at mid-off by a ball that reared up off a groove in the outfield, OPCC 5s skipper regretted his decision to proceed with the game after examining the field and pitch - as he had considered refusing to play in the frankly dangerous conditions.
Indifferent umpiring from the opposition for LBW appeals and three dropped catches meant that OPCC 5s had to toil hard in the field. At one point the OPCC skipper had to "politely ask" the umpire (opposition skipper) to stand directly behind the stumps instead of 2 feet to the side after a plumb LBW was turned down. The bowlers were rotated regularly to prevent any one bowler being targeted and avoid fatigue. Hamd, Matthew and Karthegan were the pick of the bowlers with two wickets each. The others were unlucky to not have success. A couple of run-outs were given grudgingly despite being so obvious that the batsmen should have walked.
London Tigers finally called in their batsmen after a wicket had fallen at 300 runs, off what we thought was 30/31 overs according to the scoreboard. Later examination of the scoresheet showed that we had actually bowled 35.2 overs in a match that was agreed as 35 overs a side.......
After a spicy curry for tea !?!?!? OPCC commenced their reply. Skipper Bal Diocee was carrying an injury with a torn calf muscle from earlier efforts in the field, and was struggling between the wickets. When he fell cheaply and early caught behind off a glove, the writing was on the wall - it needed a big knock from the only experienced senior player to get anywhere near the imposing target.
Wickets then fell regularly, primarily to catches as OPCCs youngsters tried to play big shots to chase down the impossible score. Only Matthew Holland, and Dharmil Pandya reached double figures and a superb stubborn and aggressive knock of 41 from Karthegan Thavanesan brought respectability to OPCC 5S reply. Eventually the last wicket fell with the score at 130 after 29 overs. Extras were joint top score with Karthegan primarily due to the awful pitch and outfield.
Throughout the OPCC innings London Tigers showed frustration and used bad language (in Panjabi), but mostly towards their own and thankfully not at the OPCC youngsters. The slips and keeper were constantly in the ear of the batsmen about what kind of mystery spin or pace delivery was coming next. There was complete indifference to filling in the scorebook and updating the scoreboard. Coupled to the umpiring, somehow I don't think that this fixture will be repeated next year.....
